Sofapaka 1-0 KCB: Batoto Ba Mungu strike late to bag maximum points
Goal Kenya.
The win enabled Sofapaka to bounce back to winning ways after last weekend’s 2-2 draw against Kakamega Homeboyz

A late Umaru Kasumba penalty was all Sofapaka needed to edge out a hard fighting KCB 1-0 in a league match played on Sunday.

Batoto ba Mungu settled early, forcing the visitors into committing mistakes and in the 7th minute, Brian Ochieng conceded a free-kick in a promising position but John Avire's delivery was deflected for a corner that was fruitless.

The first attempt for the bankers came in the 12th minute; their hosts lost the ball in the midfield and it fell to Chrispinus Onyango whose fierce drive narrowly missed the target with the goalkeeper well beaten.

With about fifteen minutes gone, the 2009 champions conceded a foul in a good area. Eston Esiye took it, picked out Ezekiel Odera, who was unmarked but the striker failed to capitalize on that chance after blasting the ball wide.

The best chance in the first half came in the 22nd minute. Sofapaka goalkeeper Justine Ndikumana misjudged a cross, gifting the ball to the bankers, but a Victor Omondi goal bound effort was cleared off the line by Moussa Omar.

With about seven minutes remaining to the break, Esiye fouled Kasumba just outside the eighteen yard area, Stephen Waruru went for it but failed to curl it past the wall with the rebound falling to Avire, who shot wide.

The hosts started the second half with urgency and in a span of about ten minutes they managed to get three corners that were defended well by their visitors. It was a cautious approach by both sides, who defended and attacked as a unit.

Kennedy Owino was well slipped into the danger zone in the 62nd minute, and with enough space and time, he shot across the goal. It could have been a costly miss; Michael Oduor was fed the ball about thirty yards from the goal but his drive was punched out for another fruitless corner.

All seemed that the two sides were destined to share the spoils until Mike Kibwage handled the ball inside the box with about a minute to go. Kasumba stepped up to send the goalkeeper the wrong way and hand his side maximum points.
