Commentary

That is all for today's live text coverage. Thanks for joining, goodbye!
Sheffield United remain 12 points from safety, having now played two games more than Brighton and Hove Albion and Newcastle United in 16th and 17th respectively. Next up for Wilder's men is a trip to Leicester City in eight days' time, while Southampton - who occupy 14th place - travel to Manchester City on Wednesday.
Southampton pick up a first win in 10 Premier League games with a 2-0 victory at Sheffield United. Ward-Prowse put the visitors in front from a penalty awarded for Ampadu's challenge on Tella, before Adams - brought on for the injured Ings - thumped in a glorious second from range. A mixture of poor finishing and good goalkeeping from Ramsdale denied the Saints a third.
90' + 4' FULL-TIME: SHEFFIELD UNITED 0-2 SOUTHAMPTON
90' + 2' Three minutes have been added on at the end of the match at Bramall Lane.
O. McBurnie
Yellow Card
90' + 1' McBurnie is also cautioned for squaring up to a couple of Southampton players. That is seven yellow cards for the match.
J. Vestergaard
Yellow Card
90' + 1' Vestergaard is booked for his part in the melee that followed Fleck's challenge on Adams.
J. Fleck
Yellow Card
90' + 1' Fleck's strong challenge on Adams does not go down well with Southampton's players. A scuffle ensues and the referee will have to calm things down here.
90' Diallo robs the ball off Lundstram. He elects to pass the ball to Djenepo on his left and that proves the wrong choice as the attack fizzles out. Adams was screaming for it on his right.
M. Djenepo
T. Minamino
88' Minamino, who has been a little disappointing today, makes way for Djenepo late on.
87' Redmond tees up Adams and the up-for-it striker bundles his way through a few players. He goes to ground and claims Ramsdale brought him down, but the referee is having none of it.
86' United have pretty much accepted that this one is over. It is a big win for Southampton, ending a run of nine games without one.
85' Mousset does the hard work by creating a bit of space for himself inside the opposition box. He has a few team-mates alongside him, including Sharp, but drills the ball straight through the penalty area.
83' McBurnie gets his head to a corner but has a little too much to do and Forster plucks the ball out of the air from under his crossbar.
81' INCHES WIDE! Armstrong is allowed to carry the ball about 15 yards infield and his reverse shot from the edge of the box is just wide of the target. Southampton really should be 3-0 up.
79' ANOTHER RAMSDALE SAVE! Redmond, only just brought on, is played through down the right but cannot squeeze the ball past Ramsdale. That was an identical chance to the one missed by Adams a little earlier.
N. Redmond
N. Tella
77' Tella has performed well on what was just his second Premier League start. Redmond is brought on for the final throes.
76' Lundstram's corner is easily gathered by Forster. Southampton will end the day 14th in the Premier League if they see out the remaining 15 minutes or so.
75' RAMSDALE DENIES ADAMS! Southampton hit their opponents on the counter. Adams races clean through but the angle is against him and Ramsdale saves the shot with his right leg.
74' Prior to today, Southampton had lost their last five Premier League away games by an aggregate score of 18-2. They last lost more consecutive away games in the top flight between November 2004 and February 2005 (seven games).
72' IT SHOULD BE 3-0! Walker-Peters pulls the ball back for Adams, who hears a shout from Minamino behind him to leave it. The Liverpool loanee is all alone 10 yards out but sends the shot wide of the target.
S. Armstrong
Yellow Card
71' Armstrong fouls Lundstram and, despite hearing the referee's whistle, has a shot from about 45 yards out. Paul Tierney books the Southampton man, probably for the second offence.
69' CHANCE! Bogle gets on the end of Stevens' centre but cannot guide his first-time shot on target from 12 yards.
B. Sharp
R. Brewster
68' United's third and final change sees Sharp come on for Brewster in attack.
67' GREAT SAVE! Mousset gives the ball away and Tella brings it inside. The youngster attempts to pick out the bottom-right corner and would have done so if not for a top save from Ramsdale down low.
65' United have a couple of players in the middle but Vestergaard, who has had a good game today, heads away Fleck's cross from the left.
63' There is a lack of urgency to United's play as a poor pass from Fleck rolls right through to Forster. Wilder has one more substitution available to make should he wish to do so.
61' Southampton have settled on a defensive shape now as they look to preserve their two-goal lead. A United goal would make things interesting.
60' Stevens heads wide of the target at the back post. The home team are getting some promising deliveries into the box - it's just a shame about the finishing!
N. Tella
Yellow Card
59' Tella is booked for a challenge from behind on Ampadu.
L. Mousset
D. McGoldrick
58' Mousset is brought on for McGoldrick as Wilder goes for a different approach up top.
57' Wilder's men are seeing more of the ball now but that is mainly because Southampton are allowing them to do so. Possession needs to be turned into chances - and quick!
55' Southampton are not really having to force the issue now. The onus is on United to find a route back into the game, which simply does not look possible on the basis of the previous 55 minutes.
53' That really was terrible defending from United, but credit to Adams for taking on the shot and finding the back of the net. Southampton, having not really got out of second gear, are cruising towards a first league win in 10.
51' Southampton striker Che Adams has scored four goals in his four Premier League appearances against former side Sheffield United, accounting for 44 per cent of his total goals in the competition.
S. Armstrong
Assist
49' Armstrong did well to chest the ball into the path of Adams. United really should have been clearing their lines long before that, though.
C. Adams
Goal
49' GOOOOAAALLL!!! SHEFFIELD UNITED 0-2 SOUTHAMPTON!! WHAT A GOAL! Adams doubles the visitors' lead with an absolute rocket into the top-left corner. Ramsdale makes a save down low but United can only clear the ball as far as Adams, who drills home a half-volley from 25 yards.
48' Stevens surges forward down the left and has options to his right. Frustratingly, the wing-back cannot beat first man Vestergaard with the cross.
47' It looks as though United will go with a 3-4-1-2 formation of sorts in the second half following the half-time arrival of McBurnie.
46' RESTART! Sheffield United get us back under way at Bramall Lane. The home team have 45 minutes to find two goals and keep their extremely slim survival hopes alive.
O. McBurnie
O. Norwood
46' Wilder has made a change at half-time, with striker McBurnie replacing midfielder Norwood.
Hasenhuttl lost Ings to an injury early on and, despite Southampton holding a one-goal lead, will no doubt be after more from his players in the second half. United have had just one effort on target so far - that quite simply has to change in the remaining 45 minutes if they are to turn things around.
Southampton lead 1-0 at the interval through a Ward-Prowse penalty, awarded for Ampadu's challenge on the lively Tella. The visitors have largely been in control, but McGoldrick squandered a great opportunity right at the end of the first half.
45' + 3' HALF-TIME: SHEFFIELD UNITED 0-1 SOUTHAMPTON
45' + 2' BIG CHANCE! Under absolutely no pressure, Diallo passes the ball straight to Brewster. The ex-Liverpool man slots in McGoldrick, who tries and fails to chip the ball over Forster.
45' + 1' We are into the first of two added minutes at the end of the first half at Bramall Lane.
45' VAR CHECK! After a quick look at that Ward-Prowse challenge on Bogle, the VAR officials stand by referee Paul Tierney's decision. The United wing-back initiated the contact himself.
44' Ward-Prowse sticks a leg out in an attempt to knock the ball away from Bogle in the United penalty area. The referee initially appeared to point to the penalty spot, but he was instead awarding a goal-kick - the right call.
42' Forster makes a great save low down to keep out McGoldrick's stabbed effort but the Southampton striker was offside, regardless. That chance was created by another impressive Fleck cross from the left-hand side.
40' The visitors enjoy playing the ball over the top and have had some good success from it so far. The second ball drops to Minamino but he is soon crowded out.
38' Southampton captain James Ward-Prowse has been directly involved in 26 Premier League goals under Ralph Hasenhuttl - 18 goals and eight assists - which is twice as many as under any other Southampton manager.
J. Bogle
Yellow Card
36' Bogle trips Tella, who has been the best player on the field in this first half, and joins Ampadu in being shown a yellow card.
34' The home side have still yet to register a shot on target but now need to find two goals from somewhere. Fleck's deep delivery is met by Bryan at the back post but he cannot keep the attempt on target, and he would have been flagged for offside anyway.
J. Ward-Prowse
Penalty Goal
32' GOOOOAAAALLL!!! SHEFFIELD UNITED 0-1 SOUTHAMPTON! Ward-Prowse sends the penalty into the bottom-left corner and Ramsdale dives the other way. A lovely spot-kick to give Southampton the lead.
E. Ampadu
Yellow Card
31' Ampadu is booked for his challenge on Tella. A bigger punishment may follow should Southampton convert the penalty.
31' PENALTY TO SOUTHAMPTON! Tella chases down a ball over the top and charges towards the box. Ampadu slides in, completely misses the ball and takes out the lively Tella.
30' Southampton work the corner well as Armstrong plays a low delivery into the feet of Tella. The youngster's shot is blocked inside the box.
29' That chance for Tella a few minutes ago is the closest either side has come to making a breakthrough. United have been pretty poor so far and Southampton not much better.
27' Sheffield United have lost all eight of their Premier League games played on Saturdays this season – as it stands, it is the highest number of games a team has played on a specific weekday within a single Premier League season with a 100 per cent loss rate.
25' CHANCE! Stevens attempts to cut out a ball over the top but instead knocks it straight into the path of Tella. The young midfielder has time to settle himself 25 yards from goal, but instead he sends a snapshot over the crossbar with Ramsdale off his line.
23' PENALTY APPEAL! Although a weak one at that! Bednarek has a hold of Brewster and the United striker goes to ground, but the referee waves play on. From the next attack, the underlapping Bryan gets in behind, but his cross is cut out by the first man.
21' Ward-Prowse sends a ball over the top of United's defence but Adams is unable to bring it under control and was flagged for offside anyway.
19' McGoldrick has a good opportunity to slot in Brewster but plays the ball into the wrong zone and Forster is able to collect. That is pretty much as good as things have got for the home side so far.
17' Another United corner comes to little. Neither side has managed a shot of note in the opening 17 minutes of what has been a low-quality contest thus far.
15' Hasenhuttl has had to contend with a number of injury issues of late and the loss of Ings is another massive blow. Adams will slot in alongside Minamino in a front two.
C. Adams
D. Ings
13' The injured Ings is replaced by Adams with 13 minutes played at Bramall Lane.
12' There is a short stoppage in play for Southampton striker Ings to receive some treatment. He is feeling his ankle and may not be able to continue - a potentially huge blow for the visitors.
11' Bertrand's free-kick drops nicely for Tella to strike, but he gets his connection all wrong around 15 yards out.
10' Brewster gets away from Walker-Peters and sends a cross into the box, which is cut out by Bednarek. Norwood swings in the corner and it goes straight out of play without a touch.
8' Ward-Prowse tries to catch out Ramsdale from a free-kick out wide. The effort is dragged wide of the target.
7' Tella is playing very high up the pitch, pretty much ahead of Minamino as the closest player to Ings. Ampadu is forced out wide and drags his opponent down to the ground, meaning a free-kick for Southampton in a dangerous position.
5' Southampton are completely dominating possession early on at Bramall Lane. That said, Hasenhuttl's men are not exactly getting the ball in dangerous positions - they are mainly knocking it around inside their own half.
3' The visitors do well to play the ball out from the back under pressure and an Armstrong shot from range is blocked. United have barely touched the ball in the opening few minutes
1' KICK-OFF! Southampton, looking to bring an end to a nine-game winless run in the top flight, get us up and running in this second Premier League game of the day.
Both sets of players are out on the field at Bramall Lane and kick-off is just a few moments away.
Sheffield United have lost two of their last three home league games against Southampton, which is more than they had in their previous 15 at Bramall Lane (W11 D3 L1). The Saints have won their last three league meetings with United overall, last winning four in a row against them in 1950 in the second tier.
Southampton show four changes following the defeat to Everton, with Walker-Peters, Minamino, Diallo and Tella coming into the side in place of benched quartet Salisu, Djenepo, Adams and Redmond. The return of Walker-Peters means Vestergaard shifting into his favoured central position, while up top Minamino will partner Ings.
Chris Wilder has made one alteration to United's starting line-up on the back of their win over Villa. It is an enforced change as Bogle comes into the side in place of Phil Jagielka, who was sent off in that victory three days ago. Bogle will seemingly fill in at left wing-back, meaning Stevens shifting into the centre of defence alongside Bryan and Ampadu.
Subs: Moussa Djenepo, Kgagelo Chauke, Alex McCarthy, Daniel N'Lundulu, Alexandre Jankewitz, Jack Stephens, Che Adams, Mohammed Salisu, Nathan Redmond.
SOUTHAMPTON XI (4-4-2): Fraser Forster; Kyle Walker-Peters, Jan Bednarek, Jannik Vestergaard, Ryan Bertrand; Stuart Armstrong, James Ward-Prowse (c), Ibrahima Diallo, Nathan Tella; Danny Ings, Takumi Minamino.
Subs: Oli McBurnie, Iliman Ndiaye, Billy Sharp, Ben Osborn, Lys Mousset, Wes Foderingham, Max Lowe, Oliver Burke, Frankie Maguire.
SHEFFIELD UNITED XI (3-5-2): Aaron Ramsdale; Ethan Ampadu, Kean Bryan, Enda Stevens; George Baldock, John Lundstram, Oliver Norwood, John Fleck, Jayden Bogle; David McGoldrick (c), Rhian Brewster.
Southampton went down 1-0 to Everton last Monday and are now without a win in nine league matches, losing eight of those games. Despite their poor form, Ralph Hasenhuttl's side are seven points clear of the relegation zone.
United beat Aston Villa 1-0 on Wednesday to pick up just their fourth league win of the campaign, but they remain bottom of the division and are 12 points adrift of safety with time fast running out to avoid the drop.
