Commentary

FULL TIME; MELBOURNE VICTORY 5, WESTERN SYDNEY WANDERERS 4 - It's all over at Marvel Stadium and the Victory have hauled themselves off the bottom of the A-League in a ridiculously entertaining game which the Wanderers almost stole at the death. With the Wanderers second-best for large portions of the encounter with their defence in particular shambolic at times, the Victory ensured that they pounced whenever the opportunity arose. Edging their way to a seemingly insurmountable 5-1 lead, the Wanderers flew home with 15 minutes remaining, scoring three goals but ultimately fall short as the Victory hold on for a tense 5-4 win.
87' The breath has been sucked out of Marvel Stadium as another raid down the left sees a ball deflect off Roux. Falling into the path of Müller, he instinctively hits it first-time and flashes home a stunning right-footed volley from 35 yards out. Incredible. The Wanderers have CHARGED BACK from 5-1 down to be within a goal!!!
Goal
85' GOAL WANDERERS! (Nicolai Müller). MELBOURNE VICTORY 5, WESTERN SYDNEY WANDERERS 4.
83' A ridiculous finish looming at Marvel Stadium as Duke presents honestly in the middle of the box. With Troisi roaming free in the left channel, he sweeps over a cross which Duke waits for patiently. Timing his leap, Duke buries his header into the bottom right corner and there's now two goals the difference. It's not going to happen is it?
Goal
81' GOAL WANDERERS! (Mitchell Duke). MELBOURNE VICTORY 5, WESTERN SYDNEY WANDERERS 3.
79' Surely not? They can't than they? With the Wanderers thrusting the ball into their penalty area, Kruse comes charging over to the right of the box and leaps in a bid to deflect the ball clear. The only issue however is that ball smacks his elbow on the way out. From the spot, Dorrans waits for Acton to move ever so slightly and pots this one straight down the middle.
Goal
77' PENALTY GOAL WANDERERS! (Graham Dorrans). MELBOURNE VICTORY 5, WESTERN SYDNEY WANDERERS 2.
75' THIS. IS. AN. ABSOLUTE. BOMB. With a shanked defensive clearance from the Wanderers falling into space, the ball is worked out to Butterfield who closes in on goal. With about 40 yards left to run, Butterfield works the ball onto his left and drills a venomous shot into the left corner from distance. Absolute stunner that.
Goal
73' GOAL VICTORY! (Jacob Butterfield). MELBOURNE VICTORY 5, WESTERN SYDNEY WANDERERS 1.
71' The despair of missing the penalty kick doesn't last too long as from the resultant corner, the Victory pounce yet again. With the delivery from the left, it's McManaman who flicks the ball on the near post and straight into the path of Ryan at the far post. With an open goal, Ryan doesn't miss and the Victory are surely home now?!
Goal
69' GOAL VICTORY! (Dylan Ryan). MELBOURNE VICTORY 4, WESTERN SYDNEY WANDERERS 1.
67' A dubious spot kick is awarded as Folami looks to blast past Gordon and fly into the penalty area. With Gordon lacking badly, the Wanderers defender sticks out a boot which Folami looks to have hurdled before he throws himself to ground. Sold on the penalty attempt, it's Brimmer who steps up to the spot however sees his shot pushed clear by Margush as he dives impressively to his right.
65' PENALTY GOAL MISSED VICTORY! (Jake Brimmer). MELBOURNE VICTORY 3, WESTERN SYDNEY WANDERERS 1.

63' SUBSTITUTION WANDERERS - O'Doherty OFF
61' Melbourne not doing themselves any favours as Gestede unceremoniously chops down Ibini as the Wanderers striker looked to cut a swathe upfield. Gestede looks to have a few words afterwards as well with a number of Wanderers players which wouldn't have helped his cause either.
Yellow Card
59' YELOW CARD VICTORY! (Rudy Gestede).
57' Not the smartest card to give away as McManaman lets Referee Fagahani know of his prior decisions in not awarded a foul in the box. A foul is given though however ultimately it's to McManaman for his dissent. Not a great look as McManaman treads a tightrope for the remaining 30 minutes.
Yellow Card
56' YELLOW CARD VICTORY!  (Callum McManaman).
G. Dorrans

54' Yellow Card Graham Dorrans
54' SAVED - The Victory on shaky ground as the Wanderers third corner of the night is taken by Troisi. Swung in neatly from the right, the delivery is pinpoint as Gordon gets up cleanly to take first strike. Hit flushly, Acton needs to get down in a hurry to smother the effort.
51' When leading at Half Time at Marvel Stadium, the Melbourne Victory are undefeated in their 36 games at this venue. The Victory with an incredible 31 wins and five draws in their clashes here since September 2006. Amazing.
50' CHANCE - Western Sydney almost with the opener for the second term as they work the ball upfield with ease. With Duke arriving unmarked, he sets his sights on a steaming header and leaves it millimetres wide of the right post. Victory defenders had next to no idea of his presence there.
48' Underway in the second half..
Penalty Miss
1' PENALTY MISS VICTORY! (Jake Brimmer). MELBOURNE VICTORY 3, WESTERN SYDNEY WANDERERS 1.
HALF TIME; MELBOURNE VICTORY 3, WESTERN SYDNEY WANDERERS 1 - We've reached the break at Marvel Stadium and a change of coach may very well be the conduit for the Victory picking up an upset of some proportions. With the Wanderers defence at sixes and sevens, the Victory have turned up and presented challenge after challenge which the visitors have struggled to contain. At the long break, it's the Victory two-goals to the good as they lead 3-1. Can they hang on??
45' + 1' Western Sydney's defending is leaving ALOT to be desired as Brimmer sets up a corner from the right. With Gordon trying to go with Folami, the Wanderers defender slips which sees Folami given an inch more space than needed. With the corner pinpoint, Folami opens up his body and sidefoots home from five yards out. Trouble for Western Sydney now..
Goal
45' GOAL VICTORY! (Ben Folami). MELBOURNE VICTORY 3, WESTERN SYDNEY WANDERERS 1.
44' McGowan takes one for the team as Kruse looks to apply the afterburners down the left. With McGowan stepping out in a deliberate act to chop the Victory midfielder down, he leaves a leg in for good measure and is duly carded. Lucky that the shade is only yellow on this occasion.
Yellow Card
43' YELLOW CARD WANDERERS! (Dylan McGowan).
41' A break in play as concern for Broxham grows with the Victory captain remaining down after a collision with Duke. Whilst the latter has his head bandaged, Broxham looks to have potentially broken his nose as he's taped up by medicos. Would be a massive blow if he missed the rest of the encounter..
39' CHANCE - Melbourne are struggling big-time in trying to contain Kamau as his nimble feet see him turning sharply inside the right side of the box. Turning in then out of trouble, Kamau whips across a low ball which Duke swings too early for. Had the latter connected, Acton would have been hard pressed to keep the shot out.
37' CHANCE - Troisi again in the thick of things as O'Doherty is afforded acres of space to apply his wares down the left. With Troisi angling across the box, the latter makes it to within 40 yards as he receives, weighs up his options and blazes a low drive half a metre wide of the left post. They're coming the Wanderers..
35' Funny what a goal can do as the Wanderers are now starting to string together a few more threatening passes. With Troisi lurking on the end of a one-two, he looks to cross from the left and almost picks up his second as a deflection off Butterfield calls Acton off his line to claim.
33' Okay, well Western Sydney have a pulse as a flowing move starts with Kamau at the back. With Duke laying a perfect ball back into his path, Kamau fires in a low cross which burns across the box. With no Victory defender in sight, it's Troisi who helps himself to a free volley as he bangs it home off the underside of the crossbar.
Goal
31' GOAL WANDERERS! (James Troisi). MELBOURNE VICTORY 2, WESTERN SYDNEY WANDERERS 1.
29' The Wanderers are shot at the back as the Victory win themselves a corner. With Brimmer afforded a clean strike as he whips it in from the left, the Wanderers defence is dire as the ball sits up invitingly at the back post. With the invitation in place, it's Roux who helps himself to a free header and nods home from point blank range.
Goal
27' GOAL VICTORY! (Storm Roux). MELBOURNE VICTORY 2, WESTERN SYDNEY WANDERERS 0.
25' CHANCE - Melbourne within centimetres of prizing open the Wanderers defence again as Folami holds up the ball 30 yards from home. Turning intricately, it's Gestede who provides the supporting run however the last pass is just a touch off as O'Doherty gets in the way to intercept.
24' The under-siege Wanderers are inching closer to finding the leveller as their latest passage sees Duke holding up play. Slipping a pass to Troisi, the latter weighs up his options before his late cross to the near post is floated directly to Acton.
22' That goal came against the run of play after Western Sydney looked the more likely to open the scoring at Marvel Stadium.
17' The Wanderers go close again as Ibini's excellent strike from distance hits the crossbar.
R. Kruse
Assist
15' A lovely Victory move sees Kruse exchange passes with Callum McManaman before crossing to the back post, where Folami volleyed home his first A-League goal.
B. Folami
Goal
14' GOALLLLLLLLLL! Ben Folami gives Victory the lead!
13' Western Sydney are continuing to push as Bernie Ibini's long-range effort is fumbled by Matt Acton, but Victory clear.
11' Another chance goes begging for the visitors as Duke's touch lets him down after a pass from James Troisi in behind.
10' The Wanderers have another attempt at goal as Mitch Duke fires a left-footed effort wide from outside the area.
9' Western Sydney have settled well and are controlling possession, as Victory sit relatively deep.
6' A half chance for the Wanderers as Jordan O'Doherty's first-time effort from 20 yards goes wide.
4' Victory have made a bright start, with Robbie Kruse looking lively early on.
