Commentary

That's all for today, goodbye!
Argentina's unbeaten run extends to six games and they will be hoping to end their year on a high with another win against Uruguay on Monday. Brazil's winless run continues as Tite's side are now without a win in five games. He will be hoping to turn things around in their next game though when they face South Korea.
Messi's first-half penalty secures a 1-0 win over Brazil. Brazil had the first big chance of the game after Jesus was brought to ground in the box by Paredes, but he sent his spot-kick wide of the post. Minutes later, Argentina won a penalty and Messi saw his effort saved by Alisson but reacted quickest to put the rebound over the goal line. Argentina had the better chances in the second half, but they couldn't add to their lead thanks to a few good saves from Alisson.
90' + 6' FULL-TIME: BRAZIL 0-1 ARGENTINA.
90' + 4' Brazil are desperate to get on the scoresheet and they brilliantly work the ball upfield down the left. Fabinho touches it onto Rodrygo, who puts a great cross into the box first time. Wesley is waiting in the middle, but his first touch lets him down and Argentina clear the danger.
90' + 2' There was a clash of heads as both Silva and Gonzalez tried to get on the end of a corner into the box, so both players are just receiving some treatment. They're both back on their feet though and will be able to finish the game.
N. Domínguez
R. De Paul
90' Another change from Scaloni now and Dominguez is coming on in place of De Paul.
L. Alario
L. Martínez
88' Martinez's number goes up on the board but it takes the forward a while to notice. He does come off the field and he's replaced by Alario.
Wesley
Casemiro
86' Final change from Tite now and it's Wesley that comes on in Casemiro's place.
85' Acuna whips a brilliant cross in from the right and Otamendi is waiting in the six-yard box to get on the end of it. Militao does just enough to put him off and the defender misses the ball.
G. Rodríguez
L. Paredes
83' Paredes has just gone down with what looks like cramp so Scaloni is bringing him off, with Rodriguez on to replace him.
82' Brazil have a chance at the other end and Danilo finds himself in a good position on the edge of the box. He decides to have a go from distance, but his effort is blocked by Pezzella.
80' GREAT CHANCE! Martinez has pulled away from the crowd in the box and brings the cross down with a great first touch. It's a poor effort from him though as he fires his effort high over the crossbar and into the stands.
78' Argentina quickly move the ball upfield and Messi has drifted out to the right to pick up the ball. He dribbles past his defender to get to the edge of the box but a heavy touch then gives Silva the chance to clear the danger.
76' GOOD SAVE! Pezzella pushes forward and lays the ball off to Paredes outside the box. The midfielder runs onto it and takes the shot first time. His effort is heading into the top corner, but Alisson gets a hand to it to push it over.
N. González
L. Ocampos
74' Second change for Argentina now and it's Ocampos that's coming off to be replaced by Gonzalez.
L. Paredes
Yellow Card
73' Paredes is booked for a late tackle on Casemiro.
Rodrygo
Willian
71' Willian also goes off as Rodrygo comes on to replace him.
Richarlison
Gabriel Jesus
71' Double change for Brazil now and Jesus is the first player to make way as he's replaced by Richarlison.
70' Argentina have another free-kick, this time just on the edge of the box, and Messi stands over it again. He gets his shot over the wall but this one's at a comfortable height for the goalkeeper and Alisson catches it.
68' Brazil are keeping hold of the ball really well at the moment, but they aren't doing much with it. They look comfortable in possession but without really causing Argentina any real problems.
66' GOOD SAVE! Messi steps up to take the free-kick that he won and brilliantly curls his effort up and over the wall. It's dipping under the crossbar, but Alisson gets a hand to the shot to tip it over.
Éder Militão
Yellow Card
64' Militao blocks Messi's run with the ball and is shown a yellow card for his challenge.
Renan Lodi
Alex Sandro
64' Lodi comes on for Brazil now as he replaces Alex Sandro.
63' Fabinho is given a lot of time and space on the ball and he switches play out to Willian on the left. He's being closely marked by Ocampos and runs the ball out of play as he's trying to get away from the defender.
N. Tagliafico
Yellow Card
61' Tagliafico is the latest player to be shown a yellow card after he catches Willian with a late challenge.
61' Coutinho cuts the ball back to Danilo on the edge of the box and he goes for goal first time. He drives his shot low towards the bottom right corner, but his effort is just wide of the target.
M. Acuña
G. Lo Celso
59' First change for Argentina now and it's Acuna coming on for Lo Celso.
57' Brazil have another free-kick, this time on the right wing and it's Coutinho that swings the cross into the box. Silva pulls away from his defender and makes a good run to the near post, but it's over his head and cleared by Pezzella.
Fabinho
Arthur
55' Another change for Brazil now and it's Arthur that makes way as Fabinho comes onto the field.
54' Arthur is struggling to find a pass into one of the forward players and turns so he can go backwards. He's just tugged back by Messi though and ends up winning a free-kick for his side.
52' Otamendi is receiving some treatment on his shoulder after landing awkwardly on his arm following a challenge with Willian. He's back on his feet quickly though and it looks like he's going to be able to carry on.
50' Brazil can't get out of their own half at the moment as Argentina are keeping the ball well and patiently waiting for some space to open up in midfield. Paredes tries to play a throughball to Martinez, but Casemiro does well to cut it out.
48' Silva plays a sloppy forward pass from the edge of his own box and ends up giving it straight to Ocampos. He makes a good run down the right, but his cross lets him down as Militao gets across to clear it.
46' Argentina get us back underway for the second half!
Philippe Coutinho
Lucas Paquetá
46' Just the one change at half-time and it's made by Tite. Coutinho comes onto the field and he replaces Paqueta.
Tite will be expecting a reaction from his side after the break as he will want to end Brazil's winless run since the Copa America. They've only had one shot on target, by Jesus in the sixth minute, and they need to keep hold of the ball better when they get into the final third. Like Brazil, Argentina haven't had too many shots in the game, but Scaloni will be happy to have the lead at half-time. All of their chances have fallen to Messi and he's looked the most dangerous for them.
Messi scores on his return to the Argentina side to give them a 1-0 lead over Brazil at half-time. Brazil started brightly and were awarded a penalty when Jesus was brought to ground by Paredes. The forward couldn't convert the spot-kick he'd won though as he hit his effort against the outside of the post. Minutes later, Argentina were awarded a penalty themselves when Messi was brought down clumsily by Alex Sandro. The captain stepped up and had his shot saved by Alisson but reacted quickly to get on the end of the rebound and put it over the line.
45' + 3' HALF-TIME: BRAZIL 0-1 ARGENTINA.
45' + 1' Messi pulls away from his defender and decides to have a go from distance. He keeps his effort low but it's straight at Alisson in the middle of his goal and the keeper makes the save.
45' Andrada comes out of his box to make a clearance but he can only find Willian with his clearance. It's a great chance for Brazil but he just can't pick out a team-mate with his throughball into the penalty area.
R. De Paul
Yellow Card
43' De Paul pushes Casemiro to the ground as he tries to win the ball back and he gets a yellow card as it's not the first foul he's committed.
41' It's a great switch of play out to Ocampos on the right and he puts a good cross into Martinez on the edge of the box. He doesn't have the space to get a shot away so touches it onto Tagliafico, but the defender's first touch puts it out of play.
39' Casemiro does really well to win the ball back from Messi before making a driving run towards the box. He tries to pick out Firmino with a throughball but ends playing it behind him and the chance goes to waste.
37' Argentina are still closing Brazil down high up the field and it's causing the defenders a lot of issues. Alex Sandro wants more time on the ball to pick out a pass but Ocampos is quickly across to him to try and dispossess him and the defender ends up winning a free-kick.
35' Brazil are keeping the ball well at the moment and are starting to cause Argentina some problems. They switch play out to the right to Arthur and he touches it onto Jesus who is making the overlapping run. It's a poor cross from him though as it hits the side netting.
33' Brazil have a free-kick on the right wing which Willian is stood over. He curls a good cross into the far post where Casemiro rises highest. He nods it back into the middle, but can't find a team-mate.
31' It's a sloppy pass from Silva that gives the ball to Messi on the edge of Brazil's box and he takes the shot first time. He's quickly closed down though and it takes a deflection off Militao.
29' Willian gets ahead of Ocampos and whips a great cross into the middle of the box. Firmino stops it with his first touch to set up a chance for Paqueta, but the midfielder's effort curls well wide of the target.
Danilo
Yellow Card
27' Danilo receives a yellow card for a bad challenge on Lo Celso.
26' Willian is trying to make something happen for Brazil down their left side and is getting into some good positions. Foyth is marking his tightly this time though and stops him from putting a cross into the box.
24' Messi takes the free-kick that was won following Casemiro's foul and tries to loop it towards Otamendi at the far post but he overhits the pass and Alisson is happy to see it out of play.
Casemiro
Yellow Card
22' Casemiro is shown the first yellow card of the game for a late challenge on De Paul.
20' Messi is being crowded off the ball so he's forced to turn around and pass it back to Paredes. He tries to switch play out to Martinez on the left but just overhits the pass and sends it straight out of play.
18' Brazil are struggling to get out of their own half at the minute. They have the ball but due to how high Argentina are pressing them, they can't seem to find a way through them.
16' That goal has given Argentina a boost of confidence and they're keeping the ball much better than they were before as they patiently build up their attacks from the back.
L. Messi
Goal
14' MESSI SCORES! Alisson couldn't get to the rebound quick enough but Messi did and he had an easy finish as he put the ball into the back of the net from close range. 1-0 Argentina!
Alisson
Penalty Save
13' Alisson goes the right way and gets a good hand to Messi's spot-kick in the bottom corner to deny him.
L. Messi
Penalty Miss
13' IT'S SAVED! Messi steps up to take it, but it's a poor penalty from the captain. He's going for the bottom left corner, and it's saved by Alisson.
12' PENALTY TO ARGENTINA! The players weren't happy a minute ago as they felt they should've had a penalty when Paredes went to ground, but this time it's given. It's clumsy defending by Alex Sandro as he catches Messi from behind to give away the spot-kick.
Gabriel Jesus
Penalty Miss
10' HE'S MISSED IT! Jesus looks very calm as he steps up to take the spot-kick and he tries to place it into the bottom right corner. The goalkeeper goes the wrong way but his shot wasn't on target anyway and it hits the outside of the post. Still 0-0!
9' PENALTY TO BRAZIL! Firmino plays a clever short pass into Jesus who is under pressure from Paredes. He does really well to turn the defender, who falls over but leaves a leg hanging which catches the forward and the referee points to the spot.
8' Brazil push forward once more and Casemiro tries to pick out Firmino with a throughball. The forward is waiting on the edge of the box, but Otamendi gets ahead of him to cut out the pass.
6' The first shot of the game is from Brazil as they quickly work the ball upfield. Jesus is played in on the right side of the box and keeps his shot low as he goes for the far corner, but it's a comfortable save for Andrada.
4' Silva is taking his time on the ball in his own half but Messi is quickly across to him to close him down. The Argentina captain tries to tackle him from behind though and gives away a free-kick.
2' Brazil are keeping the ball well in Argentina's half of the field early on here. They're patiently passing it between their midfielders as they look to find a way in behind their opponents.
1' Firmino gets the game underway for Brazil!
