Singapore 2-0 Hong Kong: Lions claim revenge

Singapore 2-0 Hong Kong: Lions claim revenge

Aleksandar Duric scored twice in the first half to give Singapore its first win since their victory against Philippines last October.

The Lions dominated the first twenty minutes of the game, looking comfortable down the left flank with Qiu Li working his magic while the visitors got the occasional attack in.

Hong Kong was finding it hard to contain the Lions midfield marshaled by Qiu Li, Shi Jiayi and Mustafic Fahrudin as the trio was responsible for conjuring up attacks for the home side.

Singapore got the early lead through veteran striker, Aleksandar Duric in the 6th minute as he comfortably headed in from a Qiu Li cross down the left flank.

With the team trailing by a goal, Hong Kong captain Lo Kwan Yee who slotted in at the right back position, was soon actively venturing up to assist his team in attack.

Hong Kong missed a glorious opportunity to grab a goal in the 16th minute as Lee Hong Lim played the ball across the goal but Chan Siu Ki was not able to get to the end of it inside the six yard box.

Singapore doubled their tally five minutes later as Khairul Nizam who was in an offside position, let Duric run past him and onto the ball to set himself through on goal.

The 42 year old made no mistake with the presented opportunity, slotting the ball past Yapp Hung Fai in goal.

Early scares for Singapore came a minute after the restart as Lam Hok Hei managed to get to the end of his teammate’s pass and rounded the goalkeeper but, with the goal at his mercy, Lam’s shot strayed away from the goalmouth.

Singapore could have gotten a third midway through the second half but substitute Khairul Amri’s attempt could only rock the crossbar.

With fifteen minutes to go, the visitors reverted to a five-man backline in an attempt to prevent anymore goals.

The 2-0 win was a morale booster for the Lions as they heae into the final gear of their preparations for the AFF Suzuki Cup.
