Dempo drew 0-0 with Mohun Bagan at home but will feel aggrieved after a couple of great opportunities to grab the win were thwarted by Shilton Paul in goal

Dempo SC were held to a 0-0 draw at home to Mohun Bagan in a round eight I-League encounter at Duler Stadium on Friday afternoon.

The Goan side saw three players making their first team debut, namely Myron Fernandes, Narayan Das and Pronay Halder, while Alwyn George and Holicharan Narzary started on the bench.

Eric Muranda returned to Mohun Bagan's first eleven in place of Shankar Oraon while Manish Bhargav was picked ahead of Nicolau Borges.

A fierce shot by Myron Fernandes was blocked by Mohun Bagan defender Shouvik Ghosh in the seventh minute. In the very next minute, a header by Peter Carvalho from a Beto corner took a vital deflection off Shouvik as Dempo started on the front foot.

The first attempt for Mohun Bagan came in the 10th minute when Manish Bhargav shot wide while Eric Muranda's attempt moments later was deflected wide by Dempo goakeeper Roychowdhury.

The best chance for Dempo was when Beto released Billy Mehmet past the last line of the Bagan defense, only for the Irishman to fail with his finish in front of rival goalkeeper Shilton Paul.

There was a much better showing by Mehmet just before half-time, though, as he managed to test Paul once again after receiving a quick one-two with Beto.

Alwyn George came on for Peter Carvalho in the second half and did well to raise the tempo of the game. Dempo began to play some neat passes but were unable to find the final ball to break the deadlock.

In the 64th minute, Beto did well to create a bit of space for himself and unleashed a shot from the edge of the box but his effort fizzed over the bar.

Katsumi Yusa was Bagan's most threatening player by far and in the 65th minute, he shimmied past Honda on the edge of the box but his shot took a deflection off the defender and struck the crossbar.

Dempo made a few tame efforts at goal first from Mehmet and then Nazary but both shots were comfortably collected by Shilton Paul. In the 80th minute, Yusa was hacked down by Colosimo and won a free-kick in a dangerous area. Denson Devdas stepped up and sent his effort narrowly wide.

Beto nearly grabbed a dramatic winner in stoppage time as he powered his header on goal from a corner but Paul produced an excellent diving save to earn the visitor's a draw after Mehmet couldn't react in time to out away the loose ball. The final whistle was soon blown with the game ending at 0-0.

The result sees Dempo's stuttering start continue as they have only garnered seven points from as many games while Bagan now have nine from their seven outings.
