Live Commentary

  • That's all from me for this evening guys and girls! Thanks for joining me. Good night.
  • FULL-TIME: SPAIN 3-1 URUGUAY The reigning world and European champions eased to a comprehensive 3-1 victory over Oscar Tabares' side thanks to a Pedro double and a further strike from Cesc Fabregas. Cristian Rodriguez scored a well-taken goal for Uruguay before half-time to make it 1-1, but two goals from Pedro after the break sealed Spain's win. La Roja are now 18-matches unbeaten following their win tonight!
  • 90' + 4'
And there is the final whistle! Spain are 3-1 winners in Doha!
  • 90' + 2'
Spain nearly force home a fourth goal in added time here after some great play from Isco on the left. The Malaga man turns Pereira inside-out before firing a cross towards Negredo, only for Muslera to pounce on the ball.
  • 90' + 1'
Muslera, perhaps to shut me up, pulls off a smart stop to deny Negredo at his near post.
  • 90'
One of Spain's many substitutes Alvaro Negredo hammers a shot at goal from long-range but it is quite some way from testing Muslera. Although, Fabregas showed earlier if you shoot on target you've got a good chance of scoring.
  • 88'
The former Masia player curls the free kick onto the head of Ramos but he cannot divert it on target and the ball bounces harmlessly over Muslera's goal.
  • 87'
Spain have a free kick 30 yards out, just right of centre. Fabregas lines it up...
  • 86'
Mario Suarez tackles Forlan well 25 yards from Spain's goal, as the reigning world and European champions ease towards the final whistle, with the score at 3-1.
  • 84'
The game has been punctured by all the substitutions in this second half, but there are still moments of quality on show. Suarez and Forlan are both inches from being onside as they race on to passes within the space of a minute for Uruguay, but on both occasions the linesman's flag shoots up.
  • 83'
Now here is a very good stat! Pedro's double tonight takes him to nine goals this season for Spain!
  • 81'
Pereira hangs a cross up towards Suarez at the back post but Ramos beats the Liverpool forward in the air and heads the ball clear.
  • 80'
    SubstitutionÁ. González M. Aguirregaray
  • 80'
STAT: Luis Suarez needs four more strikes to overtake Diego Forlan’s record of 33 goals and become Uruguay’s all-time leading scorer. He's got 10 minutes plus stoppage time if he wants to do that tonight...
  • 78'
    SubstitutionJordi Alba Monreal
  • 78'
Gonzalez is down clutching his face after sliding in on Ramos and getting caught by the Spaniard's knee. There was no malice in that from the Spain centre-back, but it certainly looked painful for the Uruguay sub.
  • 77'
    SubstitutionN. Lodeiro W. Gargano
  • 76'
Uruguay appealed to the linesman for offside against Cesc as Spain scored their third goal there, but he rightly ignored them. Cesc timed his run to perfection to take the ball from Villa before then playing in Pedro.
  • 75'
    SubstitutionPedro Negredo
  • 74'
    Assist Cesc Fàbregas
  • 74'
    Goal Pedro
SPAIN LEAD 3-1!!! PEDRO WITH HIS SECOND OF THE EVENING!! La Roja launch a blistering counter attack through the Barca trio of Cesc, Villa and Pedro, with the latter of the three prodding the ball home from close range after neat build-up play from the other two.
  • 72'
Suarez bounces off the challenges of Alba and Pique but overruns the ball slightly which allows Ramos to take the ball away from him and pass it forward to Villa.
  • 71'
    SubstitutionSanti Cazorla Mario Suárez
  • 70'
    SubstitutionEdinson Cavani Diego Forlán
  • 70'
And now Mario Suarez comes on to make his debut for Spain. Moments before he stepped on to the pitch he shared a nice exchange with his former Atletico Madrid team-mate Diego Forlan, who was brought on for Uruguay at the same time.
  • 69'
    SubstitutionCristian Rodríguez Chory Castro
  • 69'
The Uruguay goalscorer Cristian Rodriguez makes way for Gonzalo Castro with 21 minutes to go. Can the Real Sociedad man have an impact in this game?
  • 68'
Alba is certainly not making any Uruguayan friends this evening. The left-back has clashed with Pereira and Cavani - and that's just in the second half!
  • 66'
Cavani gives the ball away just inside his own half and Spain very nearly carve out a chance for a third goal! Cazorla shifts the ball to Pedro on the right, who hits a quick through ball towards the overlapping Alba only for Muslera to beat the Barcelona left-back to the ball and avert the danger for the time being.
  • 65'
    SubstitutionDiego Barrios E. Arévalo
  • 65'
Uruguay make a change of their own, the tenacious midfielder Diego Perez being replaced by Egidio Arevalo.
  • 63'
The pace of the game has decreased slightly in the last few minutes. Spain look comfortable in possession, (when don't they?), and Uruguay are struggling to get the ball off them.
  • 61'
VILLA LIFTS A SHOT JUST OVER THE BAR!! The 31-year-old hits an instinctive first-time shot towards the top right corner from the left side of the Uruguay box, but the ball flies just over the crossbar with Muslera beaten.
  • 60'
    SubstitutionIniesta Isco
  • 60'
AND THERE IS ISCO!! Welcome young Spaniard, for your first and what I can promise will not be your last appearance in the red of the Spanish national team.
  • 59'
DESPERATE DEFENDING FROM URUGUAY!! Oscar Tabares' team are having to defend in numbers as we approach the hour mark. A last-gasp challenge from Lugano on Villa stopped the Barcelona man from testing Muslera after good play from Cazorla.
  • 58'
More substitutions on the way by the looks of things... Will we see Malaga's Isco make his debut for Spain? He has been in sparkling form for his club this season, so I really hope we do.
  • 57'
CAVANI SHOOTS JUST WIDE!! The Napoli frontman swings a strike just past Valdes' right-hand post after latching on to a curling pass from Perez in midfield.
  • 56'
    Yellow Card Diego Barrios
  • 56'
    Yellow Card Sergio Ramos
  • 56'
    Yellow Card Jordi Alba
  • 56'
The referee is showing the yellow card to a number of players after both teams had a quick push-and-shove in the Uruguay right-back position. Alba was perhaps fortunate not to receive two yellow cards in quick succession there, after he fouled Pereira and then pushed him in the face!
  • 55'
Suarez slips a pass into Cavani who had evaded the attentions of Azpilicueta to drift into the Spain box, but Pique was able to quickly put in a block on the forward.
  • 53'
STAT: Spain have now used nine Barcelona players in this match. No club has ever supplied so many players for Spain in a single match.
  • 51'
    Assist Piqué
  • 51'
    Goal Pedro
GOALLLL!!! PEDRO RESTORES SPAIN'S LEAD!! Uruguay gave the ball away again on the edge of their own penalty area and on this occasion Pedro made them pay. The Barcelona attacker took a pass from Pique in his stride before slamming a shot past Muslera into the bottom left-hand corner.
  • 49'
Cavani has a chance to get a shot away after controlling a long ball with his chest inside the box, but just as he pulls back his right leg to shoot Sergio Ramos nicks in and steal the ball.
  • 48'
A very stop-start opening to this second half. I count three free kicks in the space of three minutes. Not what the neutral wants to see!
  • 47'
Uruguay win a free kick on the left but waste the chance to test Valdes as Lugano catches Alba with a stray elbow as they jostle one another at the set piece.
  • 46'
    SubstitutionJuan Mata David Villa
  • 46'
    SubstitutionCarles Puyol Piqué
  • 46'
The world champions get the second half started here in Doha...
  • Spain are making a couple of changes at the interval, David Villa and Gerard Pique are coming on to replace Carlos Puyol and Juan Mata.
  • A sweaty Carlos Puyol is being presented with some kind of award to mark his 100th appearance for Spain before this second half gets underway. He looks very awkward as he receives what looks like a golden deer. Ah well - congratulations Carlos!
  • HALF-TIME: SPAIN 1-1 URUGUAY The European champions took the lead in fortuitous fashion when Muslera parried Fabregas' shot into his own net, but that advantage did not last long as Uruguay equalised in the 32nd minute when Rodriguez turned and fired a strike past Valdes. Expect changes for both sides at the break, with players' domestic clubs no doubt requesting they not play the full 90 minutes here. Join me in 10 minutes for the second half of this finely-poised international friendly!
  • 45' + 1'
And there is the half-time whistle! The teams are level here.
  • 45' + 1'
Ramos takes the set piece, but his firm effort cannons off the Uruguay wall and goes out for a throw.
  • 45'
Spain have a free kick right on the brink of half-time after Lugano catches Pedro as the Barca attacker tried to latch on to Fabregas' through ball.
  • 44'
And now Iniesta is not happy about a Uruguay challenge. The South American side are getting up in the faces' of the Spain team at the moment, and they don't like it one bit.
  • 42'
I THOUGHT THIS WAS A FRIENDLY?? Godin has just gone flying through the back of Fabregas on the halfway line. That was no worse than the tackle Busquets got booked for earlier in this half!
  • 41'
A timely sliding block from Perez at the base of Uruguay's midfield stops Mata's pass from reaching Fabregas, just as Spain looked like they were about to weave their way into the Uruguay penalty area.
  • 39'
Santi Cazorla looked like he turned his ankle a few moments ago, but he remains on the pitch for the time being. Perhaps Vicente del Bosque will take him off at the break.
  • 38'
Uruguay are poised and ready to counter every time Spain lose the ball in an advanced position, but their urgency to get the ball forward when they do get it has resulted in a couple of misplaced passes from the back. On two occasions so far it has handed Spain clear shooting opportunities, neither of which they have made the most of.
  • 37'
Mata twists and turns his way past a couple of Uruguay midfielders but cannot thread a pass through to Azpilicueta with the right-back pushing forward down the right to support his side in attack.
  • 36'
STAT: Uruguay have won just one of their last six matches (W1, D2, L3).
  • 34'
CAVANI WANTS A PENALTY!! The Napoli striker thumps the ground in frustration after being dispossessed by Sergio Ramos inside the Spain box, but the referee has made the right decision there - the Real Madrid defender won the ball well.
  • 33'
You have got to say that goal looked like it was coming for a while! Uruguay, particularly Suarez and Cavani, have been causing Spain's defence a number of problems in this first half.
  • 32'
    Assist M. Cáceres
  • 32'
    Goal Cristian Rodríguez
THAT IS A FINE EQUALISING GOAL FROM RODRIGUEZ!! The midfielder makes it 1-1 with a superbly-taken finish after receiving a pass from Caceres on the edge of the box, turning brilliantly, then firing a shot low under Valdes.
  • 29'
PUYOL HAS SCOR...... But no, the pesky linesman on the near side has his flag up. The Spain centurion looked to have celebrated his milestone appearance with a goal only to see it sadly ruled out by the referee.
  • 28'
Godin slides in on Mata to put the ball behind as the former Valencia attacker looks to drive into the box and Spain now have a corner.
  • 27'
Spain's Mata dances his way down the wing on the right but is forced back by Caceres, who reacted well after the Chelsea man had looked to have got the better of him.
  • 26'
Cavani is a fairly attractive man but his shot just now was far from attractive! The Uruguayan striker created some space for himself outside the Spain box, but then proceeded to shoot high into the stands.
  • 24'
A wayward pass from Godin goes straight to Juan Mata, who quickly plays it forward into the path of Fabregas. The Barcelona attacker, buoyed by his earlier strike, fires another shot towards goal but this time Muslera gets down well to his left to keep it out.
  • 22'
    Yellow Card Busquets
  • 22'
The set piece is wastefully swung out to the left though, when really Perez should have been thinking about testing Valdes from that range.
  • 21'
Busquets has gone into the referee's book here after putting in what I thought was a fair challenge on Maxi Pereira about 35 yards from Spain's goal.
  • 19'
What a fine pass that nearly was from Caceres! The Uruguay left-back aims a cross-field ball at Suarez over on the right but the former Ajax striker cannot quite stretch enough to control the ball and push into the Spain box.
  • 18'
A high pass over the Spain back-line is chased down by Edinson Cavani but Victor Valdes is out quickly to meet the striker and hammer the ball upfield. Uruguay are looking more threatening as this half wears on.
  • 17'
Muslera looks devastated with that mistake, and to be honest rightly so. Fabregas wasn't even sure whether to celebrate when that shot flew in!
  • 16'
    Assist Juan Mata
  • 16'
    Goal Cesc Fàbregas
FABREGAS SCORES FOR SPAIN!!! Muslera has gifted Spain the opening goal! The Uruguay goalkeeper should catch the Barcelona midfielder's 25-yard strike but instead pushes the ball into the net behind him. That is a horrible error.
  • 15'
STAT: Spain are on a 17-match unbeaten run (W13, D4) stretching back to November 2011.
  • 13'
Suarez drives down the left for Uruguay but Cesar Azpilicueta is a match for his Premier League adversary, as he sticks out a leg to dispossess the Liverpool forward.
  • 12'
The fans in the Khalifa International Stadium are absolutely loving being there tonight and are making a considerable amount of noise in this first half. In all fairness, who wouldn't want to see the players on show this evening?? There are some quality quality players on that pitch.
  • 11'
Spain appeal for a free kick after what they deem to be a foul on Pedro by Maxi Pereira but the referee thinks otherwise and tells them to get on with the game.
  • 9'
BUSQUETS TRIES ONE FROM RANGE!! The Barcelona man arrows a shot at Muslera's goal from 20 yards, but the Uruguay goalkeeper is able to deal with the midfielder's effort fairly comfortably.
  • 8'
A speculative long pass towards Martin Caceres on the left runs out of play just before the Uruguay full-back can control the ball.
  • 7'
Anyway, back on the pitch... Spain have started to move the ball well in Uruguay's half now, but they are yet to break into the opposing penalty area.
  • 5'
I will always respect Puyol after seeing a picture of him wearing shorts and a short-sleeved top to train in when Barcelona trained in Moscow before Christmas, with the temperature well below zero. The rest of Tito Vilanova's side were decked head-to-toe in the kind of thermalwear I'd never even seen before! But, not Puyol, he probably doesn't even feel the cold.
  • 4'
Spain's centurion comes to the rescue to steal the ball from Luis Suarez as he shaped to shoot with his left foot inside the area. What a vital touch that was from the Barcelona legend.
  • 3'
Santi Cazorla nearly bundles his way through Uruguay's robust defence but his path into the area is blocked by a strong challenge from Diego Lugano - the former Paris Saint-Germain defender who now plays in Spain for Malaga.
  • 2'
The South American champions keep the ball from their possession-monopolising opponents for the first 60 seconds or so, but then the inevitable happens and Spain win it back and start calmly stroking passes to one another in the centre of the pitch.
  • 1'
Uruguay get the ball rolling in Doha - I must say the stadium looks fantastic for this showpiece friendly.
