Goal takes a look at five players with a point to prove as Orlando Pirates visit SuperSport United at the Mbombela Stadium on Wednesday night

  • Bradley Grobler, SuperSport United & Gladwin Shitolo, Orlando Pirates, August 2018

    Bradley Grobler - SuperSport United

Grobler was reportedly on the radar of Orlando Pirates soon after the departure of Thamsanqa Gabuza to SuperSport United.

However, the reports have quietened and Grobler will want to show the Sea Robbers what they are missing out on by continuing where he left off in the previous meetings.

The South Africa international is yet to get his campaign off the mark, and he will want to do it against a team which wanted to take him away from Matsatsantsa.

  • Thembinkosi Lorch Orlando Pirates August 14

    Thembinkosi Lorch - Orlando Pirates

The attacker missed his side's opening two games of the season through injury, but he's expected to return with a bang.

Lorch has been the talk of the town since last season, and he would want to prove that he is still the main man in that Pirates squad, especially on the back of last weekend's 1-0 loss to Green Eagles in the Caf Champions League

It is often very difficult for players to emulate the heroics of their previous season, and all eyes are on Lorch to see if he is a one-season wonder.

  • Mamelodi Sundowns v SuperSport United - August 2019 Thamsanqa Gabuza

    Thamsanqa Gabuza - SuperSport United

Gabuza had a love-hate relationship with the majority of Pirates fans during his six-year stint with the club.

At one stage, the burly forward had to substitute himself after being booed by a section of Bucs fans who felt he wasn't giving enough for the badge.

He gets the chance to come up against his former employers and break the hearts of the fans who called for his head for years.

  • Wayne Sandilands, Orlando Pirates, April 2019

    Wayne Sandilands - Orlando Pirates

Sandilands was in goal the last time these two met in Mbombela, and he conceded the only goal of the game against his former employers in that 1-0 defeat to SuperSport United.

However, he is back at his best and has reclaimed the No.1 shirt at Pirates. The veteran goalkeeper would definitely want to be part of the team that brings an end Matsatsantsa's dominance over Pirates.

With SuperSport United scoring goals for fun against Bucs in the past, Sandilands would be eager to keep a clean sheet and prove one cannot buy experience, more so after the club brought in French goalkeeper Joris Delle.

  • Mamelodi Sundowns v SuperSport United - August 2019 Kudakwashe Mahachi

    Kudakwashe Mahachi - SuperSport United

The Zimbabwean winger wasn't really given enough game time to prove what he is capable of at Orlando Pirates.

Kaitano Tembo has shown so much faith in Mahachi, and he now has the platform to reach his full potential at SuperSport United.

Having chipped in with a few important goals for Pirates, Mahachi would want to do the same, especially against his former employers.
