Singapore AFF Mitsubishi Electric Cup 2022 squad
Who has Singapore manager Takayuki Nishigaya picked for the 2022 AFF Championship?

Four-time AFF Championship winners Singapore will enter the competition this year with ultimate glory in their sight.

The Lions will kick off their tournament against Myanmar on December 24 before facing Laos, Vietnam and Malaysia in Group B.

Last year, Singapore reached the semi-final of the AFF Championship, losing to Indonesia 5-3 on aggregate over two legs.

Coach Takayuki Nishigaya will prepare his team to win it this year and has selected their 29-man provisional squad for the tournament already.

Let's take a look at it in detail!

  • Hassan Sunny - Singapura

    GOALKEEPERS

The experienced Hassan Sunny is likely to get the nod as Singapore's No.1 at this year's tournament, with Ziaful Nizam expected to serve as his back-up.

Syazwan Buhari and Zharfan Rohaizad, meanwhile, haven't played a single game for the senior national team as of yet and will be dreaming of making their official debut.

    DEFENDERS

Singapore have a nice mix of youth and experience in defence.

There's legendary skipper Hariss Harun, Shakir Hamzah and Nazrul Nazari who are all in their 30s, while Ryaan Sanizal, Ryhan Stewart and Nur Adam Abdullar are still Under-23.

Irfan Fandi, meanwhile, is one of those players who has seemingly been around for decades, but is still only 25 as well and is a formidable option to have at centre-back.

    MIDFIELDERS

Singapore's midfield for this tournament looks balanced and heavily relies on the Lion City Sailors' representatives.

Shahdan Sulaiman likes to dictate play from the base of midfield, with Song Ui-young a strong presence further up the field.

The experienced Zulfahmi Arifin has gotten the nod as well, with Hougang wonderkid Farhan Zulkifli the surprise inclusion.

    ATTACKERS

Ikhsan Fandi was forced to withdraw from the squad due to injury, meaning his younger brother Ilhan could get plenty of playing time up front after a superb season with Albirex Niigata.

Faris Ramli and Shawal Anuar provide creativity and pace down the wings.

  • STRONGEST XI

Sunny is expected to start between the sticks at the AFF Mitsubishi Electric Cup 2022, having recently played his 100th game for the national team.

Then in defence, Singapore could opt for a four-man defence with Nazari, Harun, Irfan Fandi and Hamzah.

The two holding midfield places are taken up by Sulaiman and Anumanthan, with Song, Ramli and Anuar occupying the attacking midfield positions.

Ilhan Fandi, finally, takes the striker's spot.

Singapore XI (4-2-3-1): Sunny; Nazari, Irfan, Harun, Hamzah; Sulaiman, Anumanthan; Anuar, Song, Ramli; Ilhan

    NOTABLE ABSENTEES

As with every major tournament, there are always some names who miss out for whatever reason and the AFF Championship is no exception.

Gabriel Quak is one such name, with other experienced heads such as Yasir Hanapi and Safuwan Baharudin also missing out, while Ikhsan Fandi is unavailable due to injury.
