Ghana celebrate at Wafu Cup of Nations
Goal picks out the ‘MTN 315’ for October reviewing the best of the last 31 days of football

  • Sadio Mane, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Liverpool

    Liverpool

The Reds may have ended their relentless winning streak with a 1-1 draw against Manchester United, but they made even more ground up on their nearest challengers Manchester City in the Premier League title race.

Liverpool head into November six points clear of the reigning champions, and their magnificent form throughout 2019 ensures they’re favourites to end their wait for the title.

  • Matthijs de Ligt Juventus 2019-20

    Juventus

Back in September, Internazionale were one of our MTN 315 Teams of the Month, but the Serie A status quo has been resumed this month, with Juve retaking top spot.

They’ve drawn two matches so far this campaign, but they remain unbeaten, and a 2-1 victory at Inter last month served as a reminder that they remain the top dogs in the Italian top flight.

  • Guinea - Wafu Cup of Nations

    Guinea

While Senegal won the Wafu Cup of Nations, which concluded in mid-October, they missed out on qualification for the African Nations Championship, and therefore missed out on our MTN 315.

Guinea, by contrast, also enjoyed success at the Wafu Cup, defeating Cape Verde to win the Plate final after losing their opener against Benin.

They then ensured they had the last laugh by eliminating Senegal from the Chan on penalties in a showdown between the Wafu Cup and Wafu Plate winners!

  • Wafu final: Nigeria vs. Ghana

    Maxwell Konadu

Ghana’s Konadu may have fallen short in the Wafu Cup final, but he deserves immense credit for galvanising this Black Stars side to go so far in the tournament, particularly considering they haven’t had a domestic league in operation since June 2018.

Konadu’s big gambles paid off, and he was duly named by ESPN as the coach of the tournament.

  • Jamie Vardy Leicester City 2019-20

    Jamie Vardy

Off-field controversies aside, Vardy has looked back to his best this term, as Leicester City have enjoyed a fine run of form to find themselves up in the Champions League places.

He scored four in three Premier League outings in October, netting in the 2-1 victory over Burnley and then hitting a hat-trick as Southampton were dispatched 9-0.

In truth, one or two other Foxes players could have made our MTN 315!

  • David Silva, Man City vs Crystal Palace

    David Silva

He may be coming to the end of his Manchester City career, but Silva shows no signs of slowing down.

The Spanish great scored two in four matches in October—netting in the wins over Crystal Palace and Aston Villa—and remains a key figure in Pep Guardiola’s side.

  • Mauro Icardi PSG Marseille Ligue 1 27102019

    Mauro Icardi

Icardi’s move to Paris Saint-Germain was one of the most hyped deals of the summer, and so far, the 26-year-old is proving to be a worthwhile buy at the Parc des Princes.

He’s scored seven in eight in all competitions for PSG following a slow start to the campaign, and enjoyed a prolific October, scoring seven in five, including doubles against Club Brugge and in the 4-0 demolition of rivals Olympique de Marseille.

  • Lionel Messi Barcelona

    Lionel Messi

It’s been another magnificent month from the untouchable Messi, with Opta naming him Man of the Match for Barcelona in five consecutive matches in October.

He contributed assists against Inter, Eibar and Real Valladolid (two), as well as goals against Sevilla, Eibar, Slavia Prague and Valladolid (two).

    Simply breathtaking.

  • Ghana celebrate at Wafu Cup of Nations

    Shafiu Mumuni

The Ghana hotshot won the Top Scorer award at the Wafu Cup after leading the line with distinction for the Black Stars.

He fully justified Konadu’s decision to name him as captain with a series of commanding displays (and vital goals), and was unfortunate not to take home the title.

The striker has subsequently been rewarded with a full Black Stars call-up.
