How JDT became the first-ever Malaysian side to win the AFC Cup

JDT secured their first ever Malaysia Super League title in 2014 after they beat Sarawak on the final match day of the season through Jorge Pereyra Diaz's goal. Going into the final match of the league season, JDT knew they had to better Selangor's result on the night and they promptly did so as the latter could only produce a 2-2 draw against PKNS FC to finish three points behind the champions.

Qualifying for the 2015 AFC Champions League play-off

It was the first time that JDT had appeared in the AFC Champions League, albeit in the qualifying stage. Indian side Bengaluru FC were the opponent and JDT snatched a victory to move on to the next stage. Hariss Harun had put JDT in front just after the break but&nbsp;Eugeneson Lyngdoh's equaliser in the 89th minute caused the home side plenty of worry. However S. Chanturu popped up with the all-important winner in the sixth minute of added time to send JDT through.

JDT 2 Bengaluru 1 (4 Feb 2015)

The Thai side proved too hot for JDT to handle as they crashed out of the ACL qualifiers, which meant they were dropped into the AFC Cup competition that year.&nbsp;Narong Jansawek put the home side in front in the first half before a brace from&nbsp;Lazarus Kaimbi sealed JDT's fate in the elite cup competition in Asia.

Bangkok Glass 3 JDT 1 (10 Feb 2015)

The first match of Group F saw JDT welcoming another Indian side to Larkin when they took on East Bengal. Nazrin Nawi had put the hosts ahead before Ranti Martins equalised for the visitors. Safiq Rahim stuck away a spot kick before half time for JDT to regain control of the match. Further goals from S. Chanturu and Safee Sali in the second half secured a positive start for JDT in the AFC Cup.

JDT 4 East Bengal 1 (24 Feb 2015)

Making the short trip of crossing the Causeway for their first away trip of their maiden AFC Cup campaign, JDT were put to the test by the Singaporean side and only secured all three points very late in the match. Left back Asraruddin Putra emerged as the unlikely hero for the Southern Tigers when he tucked away the winner in the third minute of added time in the second half.

Balestier Khalsa 0 JDT 1 (10 Mar 2015)

After a flying start to the competition, JDT were brought down to Earth in their second straight away match of the group stage. Hong Kong side Kitchee ended JDT's 100% record in the competition through goals from Juan Rodriguez and Jordi Tarez with both goals coming in the first half. Marcos Antonio was the only import that played for JDT in this match.

Kitchee 2 JDT 0 (17 Mar 2015)

JDT exacted revenge on Kitchee in the reverse fixture back in the home comforts of Tan Sri Dato Haji Hassan Yunos Stadium. Just like it was in Mongkok, the home side in this fixture emerged with a 2-0 win. The big guns returned for JDT and that saw Luciano Figueroa putting the home side ahead after just 17 minutes. Safiq ensured the points stayed with JDT after he converted a penalty just before half time.

JDT 2 Kitchee 0 (14 April 2015)

JDT not only fought off East Bengal in the match but also the torrential rain to pick up three valuable points that also secured their passage to the knockout stage of the AFC Cup that year. Under very difficult playing conditions, Amri Yahyah's early goal in the sixth minute was enough for JDT to achieve victory on the night.

East Bengal 0 JDT 1 (28 Apr 2015)

Going into this final match of the group, JDT knew that they had to do better than Kitchee to finish top of the group and did promptly so. While Kitchee could only draw 2-2 with East Bengal, JDT completed their group stage with five wins from six matches. Second half efforts from Safiq, Safee and Figueora confirmed JDT as winners of Group F.

JDT 3 Balestier Khalsa 0 (12 May 2015)

The Round of 16 and it saw an&nbsp;annihilation from JDT as they brushed aside Myanmar outfit Ayeyawady to move on to the quarterfinal stage. This single match knockout played in Johor Bahru saw JDT only leading by a single goal at half time lead thanks to Safiq. After the break, JDT turned on the turbo with Figueroa grabbing a brace while Diaz snatched a deserved hattrick.

JDT 5 Ayeyawady 0 (27 May 2015)

Another Hong Kong for JDT to overcome in the quarterfinal stage and this time it's South China. The first leg played in Johor Bahru saw Figueroa giving his employers the lead but was quickly cancelled out by Mahatma Awal. The concession of the away goal meant JDT had to look forward to a tricky second leg encounter.

JDT 1 South China 1 (25 Aug 2015)

Just like it was in the first leg, JDT drew first blood through Mahali Jasuli and a quick equaliser came via Awal for South China. The hero of the tie was Safee who came up with a brace in the first half to give JDT a 3-1 lead, benefiting from some careless performance by the South China keeper. It was a lead that JDT never relinquished as they won the tie 4-2 on aggregate to reach the semi-final.

South China 1 JDT 3 (15 Sep 2015)

JDT took to the field in the first leg without the sevices of star duo, Figueroa and Diaz. Their absences were sorely felt by JDT as they crashed to a heavy first leg defeat at the hands of the Kuwaiti outfit, Al-Qadsia.&nbsp;Doris Fuakumputu, Bader Al-Mutawa and Seydouba Soumah all scored for the home side while Amri's late goal gave a glimmer of hope for JDT for a second leg come back.
But that would not necessary as Kuwait FA's suspension by FIFA meant that Al-Qadsia were forced to withdraw from the competition and JDT were given a second crack at the AFC Cup.

Can JDT do it on a cold Saturday night in Dushanbe, Tajikistan? The answer was a resounding yes! JDT was up against the odds in the match and were forced to be on the back foot in large parts of the match but they held their line superbly and were disciplined in their shape.
Leandro Velazquez's solitary goal in the 23rd minute of the match following a corner kick proved to be the difference between the two teams. JDT had done it! In their very first appearance in the AFC Cup, they have gone all the way to lift the trophy and thus became the first Malaysian side to do so!
