Harambee Stars: Five players who deserved to make Kenya's Cecafa squad

Kenya and Michael Olunga and Johanna Omollo celebrates for Harambee Stars.
Goal profiles five players who could have had an impact on the team in the annual tournament

  • MICHAEL WANYIKA of Bandari FC.

    Michael Wanyika

The Bandari FC custodian has steadily improved this season following Faruk Shikhalo's exit to Tanzania's Yanga SC. Wanyika had a good campaign in the Caf Confederation Cup preliminaries with the Dockers, and should only get better.

Wanyika is known for his organization at the back and agility, and coach Francis Kimanzi could have considered giving him a chance in his preliminary squad named on Saturday.

  • Brian Birgen of Ulinzi Stars vs Hansen Ochieng of AFC Leopards.

    Brian Birgen

Kariobangi Sharks defender Samwel Olwande has been preferred in the position but he needs a strong backup, and Brian Birgen would be a worthy understudy.

The Ulinzi Stars full-back is solid at the back, knows what to do and consistently times his interventions effectively.

When Birgen plays, it's difficult for wingers to attack down his channel due to his determined defensive approach, and the defender has helped the Soldiers keep eight clean sheets so far this season.

  • TOBIAAS OTIENO of Gor Mahia v William WADRI of Bandari FC.

    Tobias Otieno

The former Sony Sugar midfielder has been one of the most consistent players for Gor Mahia this season. Otieno knows how to protect his back four and initiate attacks from the back, as well as doing the dirty work and stopping opposition forays forward.

He has relegated Ernest Wendo to the bench at club level, and coach Kimanzi could have considered him in his squad.

Otieno is the type of player who motivates others and never gives up no matter the situation, and he would have been a magnificent asset for this side.

  • Elvis Rupia of Wazito FC vs Chemelil Sugar.

    Elvis Rupia

Rupia could have bagged eight league goals already this term, but the relegation of Sony Sugar, a side against whom the striker scored a hat-trick, has reduced his tally to five.

On Saturday, he claimed a hat-trick against Chemelil Sugar, and the former Nzoia Sugar striker clearly has the taste for goals.

He could have been a valuable addition to the Cecafa squad.

  • CHRIS WESSAMBA of Nzoia Sugar vs TIMOTHY OTIENO of Tusker.

    Timothy Otieno

Otieno has been in a good form this season, scoring seven for the Brewers already. This is his best start to a season, and he appears to have matured enough to finalise realise his potential.

He's certainly done enough to deserve his spot in the squad, and the Harambee Stars technical bench may regret leaving him out in the cold.
