Cape Town City v Orlando Pirates: Individuals with a point to prove

12:30 AM SGT 4/5/19
Cape Town City, Teko Modise
Cape Town City are set to host Pirates in a crucial league encounter at the Athlone Stadium on Saturday, but which individuals have a point to prove?

  • Cape Town City, Teko Modise

#1 Teko Modise - Cape Town City

Modise may have left Orlando Pirates many years ago, but he's still a darling among the club fans.

Pirates may also be close to Modise's heart, but he knows that he will have to put that aside and help Cape Town City win on the day.

City still has an outside chance of winning the league, but their focus is to return to continental football; the territory Modise is familiar with and would want to return to before hanging up his boots in the near future.

  • Thembinkosi Lorch, Orlando Pirates, April 2019

#2 Thembinkosi Lorch - Orlando Pirates

A lot has been said about who should win the Player of the Season award, and Lorch's name has been bandied about since the discussion started a few weeks ago.

Lorch has carried Pirates on his shoulders for the better of the campaign, but he knows that he will have to produce a big performance against City in order to stand any chance of winning the award.

Apart from winning the award, Lorch wouldn't want his hard work to go vanish just like that as anything less than a win against the Citizens would dent Pirates' chances of winning their first league title since 2012.

  • Craig Martin of Cape Town City

#3 Craig Martin - Cape Town City

The attacking midfielder has done tremendously well for the Mother City-based outfit, and he appears to be enjoying himself against the big guns.

Martin knows that he's got the backing of Benni McCarthy, who has been able to utilize him in more than three roles since taking over last season.

Martin makes City tick, and this is what he will be expected to do come Saturday, and prove that he's one of the rising stars of South African football despite getting less recognition so far in his career.

  • Justin Shonga of Orlando Pirates, August 2018

#4 Justin Shonga - Orlando Pirates

The Zambia international has come under heavy criticism for missing some clear-cut chances of late, but this encounter presents him with a chance to rectify those mistakes and prove to the hard-to-please Pirates fans that he's still one of their best players.

Shonga has already received the backing of Micho Sredojevic, and he would not want to let down the man who has believed in him for the better of the campaign, especially now that Pirates are close to winning the league.

  • Benni McCarthy

#5 Benni McCarthy - Cape Town City

The last time Pirates won the league, McCarthy was still a player, and ironically, the now head coach of Cape Town City played a huge role in helping them clinch that title.

Last season, it was McCarthy, who literally handed Sundowns the PSL trophy by beating Pirates 1-0 at the Cape Town Stadium.

He would want to prove that his good record against Bucs is no fluke by stopping them from possibly laying their hands on the coveted trophy yet again.
