Wembley bound, Premier League bound? Liverpool loanee Wilson hoping for play-off glory with Lampard's Derby

Whatever happens during the course of Derby County's Championship play-off semi-final against Leeds, the chances are that Harry Wilson will be at the centre of proceedings.

The Liverpool loanee faces the biggest game of his young career this Saturday, as Frank Lampard’s Rams welcome Marcelo Bielsa’s side to Pride Park.

Wilson was the man who secured Derby’s play-off place, converting a late penalty against West Brom on the final day of the campaign.

That 3-1 win ensured Lampard’s men finished sixth above Middlesbrough, and that Wilson reached his own personal landmark. It was his 15th league goal of the season, meaning he hit the target set for him by Liverpool last August.

The Reds monitor the 22-year-old through Julian Ward, the club’s loan pathways and football partnerships manager. Ward, along with sporting director Michael Edwards, has been a regular visitor to Derby over the past eight months. He will be in attendance on Saturday, too.

Wilson’s form, generally, has been impressive. He has 17 goals in total, many of them spectacular.

You will remember his 30-yard free-kick in the Carabao Cup against Manchester United, for example, or his wonderstrike against Reading. The Welshman won Derby’s Goal of the Month award five times in a row between September and January.

Liverpool have been pleased with his development under Lampard and Rams coach Jody Morris, a highly-rated developer of young talent. Wilson has played predominantly from the right, but has also enjoyed a spell as a roving No.8.

Developing his defensive nous and off-the-ball work was seen as a key area when Liverpool agreed to loan him out for the season and there has been clear progress.

Wilson still retains hope of a first-team future with the Reds. He was at Anfield to watch their remarkable Champions League win over Barcelona on Tuesday, and hopes to make his presence felt on the club’s pre-season tour of the USA in July.

Liverpool have already fielded a series of enquiries – Leeds, ironically, have been among the teams linked – but for now there is no rush to make a decision.

And if Wilson can help Derby edge past Leeds to Wembley, and then to promotion, there will be more than just a few clubs looking at him.
