Salah will leave Liverpool if trophies don't arrive - Egypt boss Aguirre

Mohamed Salah may leave Liverpool “in a season or two” if the club fail to secure silverware, according to Egypt coach Javier Aguirre.

The 26-year-old striker is arguably the Reds’ marquee player on Merseyside following a superb 2017-18 campaign that saw him score 32 goals in 36 league games and fire Jurgen Klopp’s side to the Champions League final.

The Pharaohs forward also scored twice for his country in their first World Cup appearance in 28 years when they featured at Russia earlier this year in Group A.

However, Salah is yet to secure a trophy since his move from Roma at the beginning of last season, while Liverpool themselves have not seen any major honours since the 2011-12 League Cup under Sir Kenny Dalglish.

As such, his international manager Aguirre believes that unless Klopp can turn around the barren fortunes at Anfield, their star player may very well walk to seek silverware at another club.

“Salah may leave Liverpool in a season or two if he does not win trophies,” the 59-year-old told ONSport .

“Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp knows that very well and that’s why they are working hard to win trophies.”

Though he has won a plethora of individual awards throughout his career – including the 2017-18 FWA and PFA Player of the Year gongs and the FIFA Puskas Award – Salah’s team cabinet is relatively bare.

Aside from the Swiss Super League crown with Basel in 2012-13, he has won no other such honours, picking up a runners-up medal for the Swiss Super Cup the same season and one for Liverpool’s defeat in this year’s Champions League final to Real Madrid in Kiev.

However, Salah’s scintillating form over the past few years means that should Liverpool fail to deliver trophies, he will likely have no shortage of suitors if he chooses to depart the club.

Klopp’s side have already seen one chance for silverware slip away from their fingers this year following an early exit to Chelsea in the Carabao Cup.

They also face a pair of tough encounters in the Champions League group stages, having suffered an unexpected loss to Red Star Belgrade on matchday four.

Liverpool return to action following the international break on Saturday as they travel to Vicarage Road to face Watford.
