'Ozil & Mkhitaryan aren't earning their money' - Arsenal icon Wright questions output of star duo

The former Gunners striker believes more is to be expected from two players who are failing to justify their lucrative contracts

Mesut Ozil and Henrikh Mkhitaryan are not providing the “output” to justify their big-money Arsenal contracts, says Ian Wright.

The Gunners invested heavily in the two creative influences early in 2018, with fresh terms handed to World Cup winner Ozil, while a lucrative deal was presented to a new arrival Mkhitaryan.

The German has continued to offer flashes of what he is capable of since extending his stay in north London, but is currently nursing a back complaint and seeing more questions asked of his value.

Mkhitaryan is also struggling to prove his worth, with just two goals recorded this season by a man who was hauled off at half-time during Sunday’s thrilling north London derby win over Tottenham.

Arsenal icon Wright believes more is to be expected of two proven performers, telling Radio 5 Live: “As good as Mkhitaryan and Ozil are, in respect to what they’re earning we’re talking about £500,000-a-week.

“I do not believe Arsenal can afford to be paying that sort of money without getting a return, especially when you look at what they’re trying to do at the moment.

“You’re going to lose [Aaron] Ramsey as well, who probably wants £200,000, so we’re going up to £700,000-a-week in money that we’re going to have to give.

“Surely you’ve got to find three or four players that you can pay a lot of money to that will give you the output you want.”

Ozil has been a divisive figure throughout his time at Emirates Stadium, with consistency an issue ever since he completed a £42.5 million ($54m) move from Real Madrid.

The 30-year-old continues to cause the same concerns, with Wright of the opinion that a man with undoubted ability needs to offer more than just assists.

He added: “The thing with him is, do you think he’s someone that can adapt? He’s an unbelievable player but can he do it? I don’t know if he can.

“I had Arsenal fans coming over to me saying he’s had 19 assists. Thierry Henry had 20 assists and 30 odd goals – and he done it twice!

“Is that what we want, just assists? Is that what you’re going to throw in my face? And a hat-trick against Ludogorets!”
