In the absence of skipper Rita Chikwelu, the China-based defender will lead the champions against the Scorpions in Banjul

Onome Ebi will be the stand-in captain on Wednesday against Gambia following the unavailability of Rita Chikwelu for the Africa Women's Cup of Nations qualifier trip to Banjul.

The China-based woman is only returning to the team for the first time since December 2016 in Cameroon where she played a key role in the country's record eight title win.

Ebi will get the chance to start with the armband in her first match under coach Thomas Dennerby, with captain Chikwelu and vice-captain Oshinachi Ohale missing the trip.

The Sweden-based duo of Chikwelu and Ohale had featured for their clubs last Sunday but are both expected to join the team in Lagos ahead of the second leg in Lagos next Monday.

With Josephine Chukwunonye out due to an injury she chopped in her last club's match, Dennerby will pick Glory Ogbonna, Ebi, Faith Ikidi and Ngozi Ebere in the defence.

Halimatu Ayinde, who missed the France friendly in April, will be handed a chance in the central midfield alongside Amarachi Okoronkwo while Ngozi Okobi will sit out.

Washington Spirit forward Francisca Ordega and Nasarawa Amazons topscorer Anam Imo will also be handed rare opportunity to impress in the first-team on the wings.

Tochukwu Oluehi is favoured to start in goal, while Dennerby planned to field the attacking duo of Desire Oparanozie and Asisat Oshoala in a 4-5-1 formation against Mariama Sowe's side.
