Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez has praised Christian Atsu and other new signings, saying that they have improved the quality of his squad.

The 25-year-old Ghanaian joined the North-East club in a season-long loan from Chelsea last campaign, making his stay permanent after helping the club win promotion back to the top-flight.

He has made seven appearances out of seven in the Premier League so far, starting six games and scoring one goal, as well as making one assist.

“Sometimes players with quality like Mikel, it’s easier for the fans to see what they are bringing. But with the other summer signings, each one is doing their job,” Benitez was quoted as saying by Chronicle Live.

“I think the four plus one - with Christian Atsu [and not including Merino] - signings, they will give us something at certain points. Some of them right now, some of them will need some more time, but they will give us something different and we will be a bit better when compared with last season.

“You go to Jacob Murphy for example. Another one who is a young player, who trains well, trains in another way, he has Atsu and [Matt] Ritchie playing well, so he needs some time to make sure he will be fine,” he added.

Newcastle sit ninth on the log with 10 points and will travel to St. Mary's Stadium next weekend after the international break to lock horns with Southampton, who have picked only four points from their last five games.
