Ghana-born Portuguese youngster Asumah Abubakar has signed a two-year deal with Eerste Divisie side MVV Maastricht from Dutch team Willem II, the club have announced.

The 21-year-old suffered a broken fibula injury last season, which limited him to only 16 appearances with Willem, terminating his contract with them last week.

Maastricht coach Ron Elsen was full of praise of Asumah during his unveiling and believes the player will help in their bid to win qualification to the top-flight next season.

"Asumah Abubakar is a fast attacker, who has an incredible eye for goals," Elsen told the club's website.

“He is a player with a lot of potentials. He has experience after playing in the Eredivisie level and also represented Portugal at the youth level. We are glad that we were able to get him to Maastricht.

"Now he will have to show that he has returned completely after his annoying fibula injury that he suffered last season and help us in achieving our aims," he added.

Although, Asumah has previously represented Portugal's U-19 national team, he is still eligible to play for Ghana, since he is yet to make a competitive senior appearance for the European champions.
