Motaung: Nobody gives me credit for the good signings I make at Kaizer Chiefs

Kaizer Chiefs made only one signing in Gustavo Paez, and football manager Bobby Motaung bemoans that they get criticized if their new signings fail to deliver and not praised when they excel.

“I always get criticized when new players struggle, but nobody comes back to give us credit when there is success, but that is football. We can’t always buy players based on statistics,” Motaung told The Star.

“For me, the players we have signed this season are good players. But some of them obviously needed time to adjust to the pressure at this club as well as the style of play. We looked at the future-their age, their potential and taking the brand forward,” Motaung said.

“The issue around our scouting network is unique,” he added.

“My job is to give a player an opportunity if our scouts and coaches have identified them. If a player comes to Chiefs and was popular elsewhere but fails to make it here, it doesn’t mean he is a bad player or useless."

“We would have obviously thought he could fit into our plans. It’s normal to be criticized when things are not going well, but when the team is winning nobody comes back to me and says you made great signings," Motaung continued.

“You can only know once the player is here playing for you whether he will click or not. It happens in football. People sometimes ask that we sign certain players and when we do they don’t cut it."

"That doesn’t mean the player is a flop. Sometimes the jersey is heavy and sometimes a guy like Paez puts it on and you can immediately see he should be playing for Chiefs,” Motaung concluded.
