Manyama: Cape Town City provide update on ex-Kaizer Chiefs star after PSL transfer window closes

  • The accomplished attacker is still with City after leaving Chiefs
  • The Citizens coach admitted his admiration for Manyama
  • The former Bafana star won the PSL Footballer of the Year award as a City player

WHAT HAPPENED? City assistant coach Diogo Peral has divulged that the experienced attacking midfielder is still with the club as he looks to earn himself another contract with the Citizens.
Manyama has remained unattached since parting ways with Kaizer Chiefs at the end of last season while carrying a serious knee injury and the Citizens allowed him to do his rehabilitation at the club.
Peral has now explained that Manyama, who was on the books of the Citizens between 2016 and 2017, is looking good having started training with the team.

WHAT DID PERAL SAY? “We like him, the coach [Eric Tinkler] has worked with him before and he likes him. He knows what he can do, but we need to see if the rehab goes well,” Peral told Sowetan.
“He is starting to play already and the medical guys are working with him. I think we are going to get an update sometime this week. He is still doing rehab and we are going to have a report this week on how far he can still go.
“For now, he is training with us ... there is nothing new. He was actually in the session today [yesterday] and he was looking good, best I have seen him in a while,” he said.
“He trained with the rest of the team. I think it was the second or third time already. He is slowly getting back. At the moment there is nothing. We are just trying to get him back where he was. He is a great guy to have around the group. The injury was quite a serious one.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE: City don't seem to be in a rush to make a decision regarding Manyama who captained the team as it clinched the 2016 Telkom Knockout Cup under Tinkler.
The Alexandra-born player is able to sign for the Citizens even outside the PSL transfer window having received his clearance from Chiefs when the Soweto giants released him.
Having now started training with City, the 32-year-old will have to show that he can still be a viable asset to the Western Cape-based side having entered the twilight of his career.
The former Bafana Bafana star was a regular at Chiefs whenever he was match fit and Tinkler is known to be a big fan of Manyama and this could work in the veteran player's favour as he eyes a deal with the Citizens.
