Following up Malaysia success in Bangkok to hold Thailand to a 2-2 draw and thus advancing to the final on away goals rule, 24 hours later and their opponent in the final was known.
Vietnam who had taken a 1-2 lead from the away leg against Philippines, repeated the same scoreline in Hanoi through goals from Nguyen Quang Hai and Nguyen Cong Phuong.
This gave Vietnam a comprehensive 4-2 aggregate win over Philippines and they will now take on Malaysia in a two-legged final on December 11 and December 15. The first leg will be played in Kuala Lumpur with the return leg in Hanoi.
In total, both teams have played in the final five times but have none of those appearances were against each other. Although Malaysia and Vietnam have met each other at the semi-final stage previously.
The match, is also a repeat of the group stage match in this 2018 AFF Suzuki Cup as both teams started the competition in Group A. That time, Vietnam came away with a 2-0 win after Park Hang-seo produced a masterclass in tactics.
However, Malaysia have grown tremendously since then as proven by the win Myanmar as well as the big outcome achieved against Thailand. After two editions of The War Elephants holding onto the trophy, it is now time for a new winner.
