Two goals against Southampton saw the Englishman surpass the Argentine as Europe's most prolific marksman across the calendar year

Harry Kane's hat-trick against Southampton on Tuesday saw the Tottenham striker overtake Lionel Messi for total goals scored in 2017.

Having previously scored a hat-trick in Saturday's 3-0 win over Burnley to move to 53 goals for club and country in the calendar year, Kane bagged another three goals on Boxing Day at Wembley.

Heading into the match Kane was one goal behind Barcelona superstar Messi, who earlier that day scored a penalty in his final game of 2017 – a 3-0 defeat of Real Madrid in the Clasico at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Kane moved level with Messi on 54 goals by heading his first against the Saints at Wembley –  breaking Alan Shearer's record of 36 Premier League goals in one year in the process .

And a stunning 12 months for the 24-year-old was capped off with a further two efforts either side of half-time in the 5-2 victory, and Kane is delighted to be mentioned in the same breath as the Barcelona forward and his Real Madrid arch-rival, Cristiano Ronaldo.

"I'm very proud," Kane told Sky Sports after the match. "Messi and Ronaldo have dominated football for so long and are two of the best players ever.

"To be compared to them, or just be up there with them is a great honour."

Kane's 56 goals came from just 52 appearances, at 1.06 per game, while Messi's 54 were scored from 64 outings (0.84).

The Spurs man heads an all-star leaderboard atop the scoring charts as Ronaldo, Robert Lewandowski and Edinson Cavani all finished 2017 with 53 goals to their name.

He is second behind Cavani in the Golden Shoe leaderboard for 2017-18 having scored six league goals in four days .

"I think he deserves everything," Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino said. "In the last nine or 10 years it has been between Cristiano and Messi, but now his name is there.

"I'm so happy for him, also all the team because it was all as a unit, but its a fantastic achievement. I congratulate him. Well done."
