Kaizer Chiefs have downplayed the possibility of missing the services of both Siphiwe Tshabalala and Khama Billiat for their 2018/19 Premier Soccer League (PSL) opener against Mamelodi Sundowns this coming weekend.
The duo suffered knocks in their final pre-season match against Cape Town City in Mbombela on Saturday afternoon.
Amakhosi started their pre-season ahead of the new PSL season in the 2018 Maize Cup tournament, and it came a day after new coach Giovanni Solinas was unveiled as the club’s new boss.
Chiefs went on to beat Buya Msuthu and Free State Stars to walk away with the trophy for the second successive year at the James Motlatsi Stadium in Orkney.
In their second pre-season tournament, they faced Mamelodi Sundowns in the Shell Helix Cup, but they lost 2-1 at the FNB Stadium.
However, with interim coach Patrick Mabedi set to hand over the coaching reigns to the Italian manager, the Soweto giants faced the Citizens in Mbombela and they lost 1-0.
Resulting from that defeat, their new signing Billiat, suffered an injury as he collided with defender Taariq Feilies during the Mpumalanga Cultural Experience Cup.
Moreover, Tshabalala also limped off the pitch in the opening half of the clash and there are fears that the duo could miss the all-important encounter in Tshwane on Saturday.
Speaking for the club in relation to the duo’s injuries, Vina Maphosa said the injuries are not serious.
“They are not serious, but we will update you about everything when we announce our season plans next week, including injury updates,” said Maphosa as quoted by Phakaathi.
Meanwhile, coach Pitso Mosimane’s men will want to resume their PSL title defence campaign on a high against Chiefs as they are fresh from a 2-1 win at home over AS Togo-Port of Togo on Friday.
Should Solinas receive his work permit before the clash, he will be on the Amakhosi bench at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.
