A vital three points for Newcastle

Ernie Merrick has two of his new signings to thank as they delivered timely goals for his Newcastle Jets side in a 2-0 win over Brisbane Roar. 

With Roar striker Adam Taggart stuck on the bench, Eric Bautheac looked to step up in the 16th minute as his curling effort was touched just wide by Glen Moss.

Despite looking wasteful in front of goal, it would be the Jets that opened the scoring via Kaine Sheppard in the first minute of injury time.

Daniel Georgievski finding the striker at the near post as the English attacker guided the ball past a stranded Jamie Young for his first A-League goal after joining the club over the off-season.

Fellow new signing Jair would then end his 14-month goal drought in the second-half as he finished clinically following a fast break away.

The Brazilian smashing the ball past Young in the 58th minute after Dimitri Petratos darted up field and took his time to tee up his Newcastle teammate.

Even the introduction of Taggart proved fruitless for Brisbane as they slumped to a disappointing 2-0 defeat that leaves them ninth on the A-League ladder.
