On a night that anything less than a seemingly-unlikely win would have condemned them to relegation from the Malaysia Super League (MSL), Negeri Sembilan recorded a rare win instead, edging Selangor 3-1 at home in their round 20 match on Wednesday.
The win slashed their gap from safety and Kuala Lumpur in tenth place to six points with two league rounds remaining to be played, and allowed them to pip Kelantan to the eleventh spot temporarily.
The Deers have forward Nicolas Velez to thank for, as the Argentine scored a brace in the encounter; opening the scoring in the 13th minute, and sealing the win with his 75th minute goal at a time when Selangor were pushing for the equaliser.
Speaking to the press, the 28-year old remarked that top-tier safety is still within their grasp, as they will next play Kuala Lumpur, and their opponents have to face champions JDT in their final league encounter.
"It was a good game for us to get the three points. We needed to win tonight to have a small, small chance [of staying up], and we've done that. We now have a chance to catch Kuala Lumpur and stay up, and we need to do our best.
"We previously lost in five consecutive league matches, but we've changed and shown character. If we keep playing like we did tonight, we can beat any team. We need to repeat it this Saturday.
"Now everyone needs to do their job and win the two remaining games, in order to maintain the slim chance we have," said the former Suphanburi man.
