Aaron Mooy's place in the heart of the Socceroos midfield looks set to change with incoming coach Graham Arnold eager to play the Huddersfield man higher up the pitch.
After a slow start to his international career, Mooy has now cemented his place in the national team, pulling the strings deep in Australia's midfield.
Calling the shots alongside Mile Jedinak at the World Cup in a holding midfield role, the 27-year-old impressed but couldn't provide a much-needed spark as the Socceroos became the only side not to score from open play in Russia.
Ahead of his first training camp in September and a friendly against South Korea in November, Arnold has stressed the need for Australia to rediscover their potency in the final third.
Expected to turn strongly to youth over the coming months, the Socceroos coach also revealed Mooy's role in the team could be tinkered to get more out of him in attack.
“There’s two ways to use him — one is at (number 6) that Bert did, to start the play," Arnold told Fox Sports News.
"And the other way is to put him in the final third where we can use his strengths and his creativity, but also his goal scoring ability.
“Aaron is a fantastic player and to get him in the final third would be great.”
Mooy has scored just twice for the Socceroos since 2013, with his last goal for the green and gold coming against Jordan in 2016.
He's proven more potent for English club Huddersfield, bagging four league goals in each of his past two seasons for the Terriers.
How Arnold plans to incorporate Mooy higher up the pitch remains to be seen, but the man himself is no stranger to playing higher up the pitch.
Failing to make the position his own at Western Sydney Wanderers, he was deployed slightly further back on the left at City and really started to shine - scoring 22 goals across two seasons and ultimately earning a move to England.
Now donning the number 10 jersey at Huddersfield, Mooy has been given real freedom in the Terriers midfield and it's something Arnold now looks willing him to give him in the green and gold.
