The Kenyan champions started their title defence on a sour note after losing to the Coastal-based side 2-1 in the league opener

Gor Mahia have admitted that they are missing the services of lead striker Jacques Tuyisenge.

The Rwandese striker picked an injury in November while playing for Amavubi in the 2-2 draw against Central African Republic in the qualifiers of 2019 Afcon, and aggravated the same when he started for K’Ogalo in the 1-0 win against Nyasa Big Bullets of Malawi.

Tuyisenge was forced out of the Caf Champions League match and has since missed a number of matches for the Kenyan champions including the return leg of the competition in Malawi, the Super Cup defeat to Kariobangi Sharks and also the league opener against Bandari on Saturday.

Asked by Goal.com if the club is missing Tuyisenge’s services after losing to the Dockers, assistant coach Zedekiah ‘Zico’ Otieno admitted that his absence was indeed a big blow to the club now that he was their main striker. “I can admit that we are missing Tuyisenge (Jacques). He was our top scorer last season but what can you do, if the player is injured?

“Tuyisenge is out and we must build a team without him as we wait for him to return. We miss him yes, but must always remain focused and use the players that we have.”

However, ‘Zico’ has refused to accept that Gor Mahia are struggling so far this season because they are yet to sign top strikers to beef up the squad. “I don’t think so, we have the same players as from last season and remember we scored from a striker and not a defender.

"That will not be a good excuse. Let’s accept that we were not clinical upfront and we deserve to improve on the same as many teams will now want to come hard on us and win because they are playing against the champions.”

Gor Mahia are also in the Caf Champions League where they will face Lobi Stars of Nigeria in the first round after eliminating Nyasa Big Bullets of Malawi.
