Gambia women head coach Mariama Sowe has praised her players despite their 6-0 defeat to Nigeria in Monday's African Women Cup of Nations qualifier.

The visitors lost 1-0 at home in the first leg and were hoping for a change in fortune at the Agege Stadium, however, they returned home with a basket full of goals to crumble 7-0 on aggregate.

Despite the minor setback, coach Sowe has taken her side's failed expedition in good fate while urging the Gambia football house to maintain its good support for women's national side.

"I feel very much proud of my girls but I will like to congratulate Nigeria," Sowe told Goal.

"As we all know, Nigeria are the champions of Africa and have won the tournament for eight times, so, we were not surprised at all.

"I was expecting my girls to do better here than they did in Banjul. But things went the other way - man proposes but God decides. It is football.

"There was one time that football was dead in the Gambia. It was the recent Gambia Football Federation executives who have helped to develop women's football so that we can showcase our talents.

"Losing 1-0 in Gambia I did not expect us to lose 6-0 here but I will tell my girls to keep up the momentum. This is not the end of life.

"I got a lot of experience from this qualifying tournament. A small team like Gambia eliminated Burkina Faso and played against the African champions. I think that it was a great progress for us."
