While Amakhosi have bolstered their squad in the current transfer window, perhaps they should have raided Sundowns for a few more players in the past

Kaizer Chiefs are set to lock horns with Mamelodi Sundowns on Saturday night, and Goal looks at the Brazilians players who would have gone on to make a name for themselves had they joined the Soweto giants.

Moves between the two clubs are not necessarily unheard of, as for many years, players have moved between the two clubs.

Influential players such as Jose Torrealba, Ramahlwe Mphahlele, Josta Dladla, Fabian McCarthy, Punch Masenamela and most recently Leonardo Castro among others, have had the honour of donning both jerseys.

Below is a list of players who could have been ideal for the Glamour Boys, but opted to either join or sign new deals with Sundowns.

Jeremy Brockie

Over recent transfer windows, it was common knowledge that Chiefs were looking out for a proven goalscorer. While Chiefs were previously reported to have enquired about the New Zealand international's availability, but nothing ever materialised, which allowed Sundowns to eventually capture SuperSport United’s second highest goalscorer.

But while Brockie’s price tag would certainly have been a deterrent, it should be noted that he is a player worth breaking the bank for. If Chiefs had lured the 30-year-old to Naturena, they would have acquired not only a proven goalscorer who scored 54 goals in 119 appearances but someone with international and Caf experience.

Themba Zwane

For a long time, Zwane was believed to have peaked the interest of Chiefs. But after he put pen to paper on a new contract keeping him at Chloorkop for at least the next three years, any talk of a move away from the club dwindled. The 28-year-old though, could have potentially been a hit at Chiefs. His skill, calmness on the ball and knack for goals would have seen him become an instant fan favourite as many would have been able to assimilate his style of play with many of the Chiefs legends of yesteryear.

Also, his versatility would come in handy for Steve Komphela. Not only would he be able to play on the wing, but he could be used as a traditional number 10, and be the creative outlet that Chiefs fans have been calling out for, for many years.

Percy Tau

Another proven goalscorer, but unlike Brockie, Tau is not an out-and-out striker. At 23, he still has plenty of football ahead of him, and Chiefs could have potentially built a squad around him had they identied as a target when he was loaned out to Witbank Spurs.

His versatility would have also came in handy, and he is a player who Steve Komphela would love to have nurtured under his wing, but with seven goals to his name already this season, the Sundowns star looks destined to move onto one of Europe’s top leagues in the coming years.

Khama Billiat

Probably the only player on the list who is actually capable of joining Chiefs at the moment as his contract is set to run out at the end of the season. But the Zimbabwe international is undoubtely a gem to have in any team.

Whether he might be used out on the wing, as a false nine or behind a target man, he is the real deal. At 27 years of age, Billiat is also at the peak of his powers and there are a few in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) who are genuine game changers like Billiat.

However, while a move away from Sundowns is likely, a move to Chiefs remains unlikely with the player linked with a multi-million Rand move to Azerbaijan champions Qarabag.

Hlompho Kekana

Lastly, the Sundowns captain is the type of player every side would want to have, but despite having Willard Katsande in the team, Kekana would still offer something different. He could form an absolutely formidable partnership with the Zimbabwean, as he is able to break down play, as well as offer a creative outlet going forward. Also not to forget, the veteran’s experience and an eye for the audacious goal would makes him an instant fan favourite.

Perhaps if Chiefs had shown the money a few years ago, it might have tempted Kekana to jump ship prior to agreeing to a new long-term contract, but for now having Kekana in their ranks is highly unlikely.
