While Kaizer Motaung should be commended for being brutally honest about the appointment of Giovanni Solinas as head coach of Kaizer Chiefs, his comments could open a can of worms going forward.
Motaung told the media last week that Solinas was not the club's first choice, but that was too obvious as the Italian mentor was only appointed as head coach three weeks before the start of the campaign.
His record so far proves that he is still new in the job, and these comments may not help his cause in the long run, especially if things don't improve.
A single win in eight matches isn't a good enough effort by a team of Chiefs' calibre, and Solinas is partly to blame for the way the team has performed thus far.
Motaung pleaded for patience from his club fans and so has Solinas, who recently said he didn't have a 'magic wand' to turn things around overnight.
Granted that it will take a bit of time to take Chiefs to greater heights, but should his team continue to lose and draw matches, Solinas may well hide behind Motaung's comments that he was never the first choice anyway.
These comments could either break or make Solinas, who is renowned for changing clubs for various reasons every time he starts feeling the heat.
It's too early to judge the 50-year-old at Chiefs, but one thing for sure is that another barren season will not be tolerated by the club supporters.
Solinas also knows that he may not enjoy the same support that his predecessor, Steve Komphela, enjoyed from the management, and Motaung's comments could just be enough to make that conclusion.
This means it would be easy for the management to pull the trigger on him should Amakhosi continue to falter in both the league and Cup competitions, and later admit that they took a gamble by hiring Solinas.
But Solinas has all the necessary tools to make the most of this opportunity which he now knows that it was meant for other coaches probably better than him, and it's up to him to prove that he is as good as the coaches Motaung was referring to in his interview.
He could either take these comments in a positive or negative way, but in the end, it will do him a world of good to use them to build a solid foundation and prosper against all odds.
