Kaizer Chiefs are edging closer towards naming a new coach at the helm of the first team.

Amakhosi have been without a permanent coach ever since the departure of Steve Komphela due to another trophy barren season. Chiefs though have been hard at work sifting through a plethora of applications, and the club’s hierarchy have suggested that a new coach will be in place before the players return for pre-season.

Nonetheless, Chiefs could have a new coach in the coming weeks if Chiefs football manager Bobby Motaung’s utterances are to be believed. In an interview with SowetanLive, Motaung stated that the club are planning on narrowing the list of potential candidates down to three or potentially even one later this week.

"It was six and it's still six," Motaung told the publication.

"We will cut it down to three this week, or maybe one,” he added.

In recent weeks, Chiefs have been linked with several coaches including Free State Stars tactician Luc Eymael, Botswana’s Township Rollers head coach Nikola Kavazovic, Frenchman Patrice Carteron and former Chelsea mentor Avram Grant.

However, reports emanating suggest that Grant is at the top of the pile and that he too is keen to takeover at the helm despite being in charge of North East United in the Indian Super League.

"We don't want to make comments at the moment, just give us time to go on with the process that we are following,” Motaung explained.

"We will call you [the media] soon," he said.

"We will make our people [the fans] aware and tell them what's happening. We will appoint a new coach before pre-season," Motaung concluded.

Meanwhile, Chiefs are set to return for pre-season in the next 10 days as they begin preparations for the inaugural Shell Helix Ultra Cup which sees them pitted against Mamelodi Sundowns in a match to be held on July 21 at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg.
