Akwa United shift focus to Federation Cup after NPFL abrupt ending

The Promise Keepers are looking to reclaim the national competition title

Reigning champions Akwa United have now turned their attention to defending the Federation Cup title this year as they face neighbours Rivers United in a friendly.

Lobi Stars secured the sole ticket for next year’s Caf Champions League after the 2017/18 top-flight season was abruptly ended due to its disrupted league calendar by the Nigerian Football crisis.

And coach Abdu Maikaba will be hoping for a repeat of his Cup success with the Promise Keepers, starting their preparations with a high profile warm-up against the Pride of Rivers in Uyo.

Club’s media officer, Mfon Patrick disclosed that the encounter will take place at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium on Wednesday, September 5, 2018.

“We will battle Rivers United in a grade A friendly at the training pitch of the Godswill Akpabio international stadium on Wednesday, 5th September 2018,” Patrick told Goal.

“We are already training hard for weeks now and hope to use the friendly to test the fitness level of our players ahead of this year's Federation Cup tournament.”

The winner of this year’s Federation Cup will emerge the sole representative of the country in next year’s Caf Confederation Cup after the nation’s two slots were reduced to one by Caf.
