GAME PREVIEW

A high-flying Minerva Punjab FC side are set to lock horns against Indian football giants Mohun Bagan in an I-League encounter in Kolkata on Wednesday. The Ranjit Bajaj-owned outfit has exceeded expectations in the league so far this season.

They have collected 16 points from a possible 21 in their first seven matches of the season. A win against Mohun Bagan will take them to the top of the table, one point ahead of East Bengal, with a game to spare.

The side from Punjab boasts a solid defensive unit and a lethal attack. The presence of Chencho Gyeltshen, popularly known as the 'Bhutanese Ronaldo', on the left flank makes their attack formidable. The Bhutanese winger has experienced a brilliant run of form so far and will be a cause of worry for Mohun Bagan right-back Arijit Bagui.

Mohun Bagan, on the other hand, have gained some confidence after their 2-0 win over defending champions Aizawl FC in their last game. They were on a four-match winless streak prior to that game and were under a lot of pressure.

Their head coach Sanjoy Sen left the club and his assistant Shankarlal Chakraborty has taken up the position of head coach. Chakraborty began his managerial campaign on a winning note, bringing life to the gloomy Mariners' camp.

Australian midfielder Cameron Watson made his debut for the Green and Maroons last game. He had a decent outing and brought back the much-needed stability at the centre pitch which had been missing since Yuta Kinowaki's injury.

Right-back Arijit Bagui also returned after a prolonged injury layoff in their last game. He had an impressive outing as he combined well with Nikhil Kadam on the right flank.

We can expect one change in the Bagan starting XI from the previous match. Sk. Faiaz could come back to the lineup in place of Dipendu Dowary. Faiaz had replaced Dowary in the previous match after just 30 minutes.

These two sides faced each other on the very first day of I-League this season in Chandigarh and the match ended 1-1. Sony Norde had scored the opening goal for the away side before Moinuddin Khan equalised in the dying moments of the game.
