Commentary

Thank you for following our coverage of tonight’s Champions League match-up between Club Brugge and Zenit. Until next time, stay safe!
Next up for Club Brugge is the visit of Sint-Truiden on Saturday evening back in the Belgian Pro League whilst Zenit face off with Ural in the Russian Premier League on Saturday afternoon.
The hosts run out easy winners tonight and set up a final matchday showdown against Lazio with qualification for the Champions League knock-out round still on the line. Strikes from De Ketelaere, Vanaken and Lang push the home side past Zenit who played well but were toothless in attack. The Russian side finish bottom of the group and fall out of European competition for the season.
90' + 3' FULL-TIME: CLUB BRUGGE 3-0 ZENIT.
T. Van den Keybus
Clinton Mata
90' + 1' A late change for the hosts as youngster Van den Keybus replaces Mata.
D. Prokhin
Yellow Card
90' Prokhin goes into the referee's book as he brings down De Ketelaere.
90' There will be a minimum of three minutes of additional time played here in northern Belgium.
89' CLOSE! Sobol and Okereke instantly link up and nearly get a fourth for Club Brugge. Okereke’s right-footed effort from 25 yards out just misses the far bottom corner of the Zenit goal.
S. Schrijvers
R. Vormer
88' Vormer gets a much deserved round of applause as he is replaced by Schrijvers.
88' Since the start of last season, Emmanuel Dennis has been involved in five of Club Brugge’s nine UEFA Champions League goals (57%), scoring three and assisting two. The forward brilliantly set up Lang tonight which has put this match out of the reach of the Russain visitors.
D. Okereke
N. Lang
87' The triple substitution is complete as Lang departs for Okereke.
E. Sobol
H. Vanaken
87' A first change of the evening for Club Brugge as Sobol comes on for Vanaken.
85' Credit to Zenit as they continue to attack late on in this match. Most teams would have given up at 3-0 down but the Russian champions are still pressing every loose ball and are trying to find a way to get on the scoresheet.
82' CROSSBAR! Zenit nearly get a goal back. Sutormin gets the ball on the halfway line and drives towards the Club Brugge goal. The full-back seems to travel with the ball for an age before smashing a right footed shot against the woodwork from 20 yards out.
80' A Ciro Immobile penalty has drawn Lazio level with Dortmund in Germany. Club Brugge will be hoping that the German side can at least grab a draw tonight to give them a chance of qualifying in their last Champions League group game.
78' That goal from Lang means that Club Brugge will finish the night three points better off in Group F. The hosts have looked assured on the ball in the second half and are good value for their lead. Captain Vormer has in particular put in a big shift in central midfield for the hosts.
D. Shamkin
Malcom
75' Zenit make their final change of the night as Shamkin replaces Malcom.
E. Dennis
Assist
73' Great work from Bonaventure who has been a menace tonight for the Zenit defenders.
N. Lang
Goal
73' GOOOAAALLLL!!! 3-0!!!! LANG!!! It’s all over here in Belgium. It’s great work down the right wing from Bonaventure who takes on his man before crossing into the penalty area. Lang peels off from his defender and finds the far corner with a lovely right footed finish from 15 yards out. Easy as you like.!
73' Zenit get a free kick in a dangerous position on the left wing. The ball is swung in and Azmoun meets it but his header from 15 yards is well over.
71' NEARLY! Vanaken nearly makes it three for Club Brugge. Vormer crosses from the right wing and his midfield partner rises highest but his header just loops over the crossbar.
69' Zenit have very much missed their talisman Artem Dyzuba tonight. Azmoun has played well as the lone striker but the Iranian international likes to drop deep and collect the ball leaving nobody upfront to occupy the opposing defenders.
A. Sutormin
Yellow Card
66' Sutormin is a very lucky man! The Zenit full-back races towards Ricca and absolutely clatters the Club Brugge man. Lesser fouls have seen red cards in the past.
L. Musaev
D. Kuzyaev
65' Kuzyaev departs as Musaev takes his place in midfield for the visitors.
65' Zenit force a corner as Barrios’ cross smashes into Mechele. This could be a big chance for the visitors.
63' A push by Ozdoev on Vanaken in the middle of the park relieves the pressure on the hosts who gain a free kick. Zenit will need to be very disciplined in the final half an hour of play if they are to find a way back into this clash.
60' Club Brugge have not played overly well tonight but find themselves two nil up in this crucial Champions League match. Zenit need to dig deep if they are to get any sort of positive result from this match now.
H. Vanaken
Penalty Goal
58' GOOOAAALLLLL!!! 2-0 TO CLUB BRUGGE! VANAKEN!!! The midfielder steps up to the spot and dispatches his penalty into the bottom left-hand corner of the Zenit goal.
57' PENALTY TO CLUB BRUGGE!! The Zenit defenders are in disbelief. De Ketelaere tries to latch onto a pass but he is caught late and the referee points to the spot.
55' Ozdoev tries to find Mostovoy with a clever through ball but he just overhits his pass. Club Brugge reply by forcing a corner up the other end as Lang sees a shot blocked.
53' The triple change at half-time has certainly woken Zenit up. The Russian side have made a much better start to this half and have controlled all the possession. A cross from Krugovoy is cleared for a corner but the visitors can’t make the most of the resulting set piece and the danger is cleared.
51' When these sides last met in October – Club Brugge winning 2-1 on the occasion - De Ketelaere (19y 224d) became the Belgian side’s youngest ever scorer in the competition with his 92nd minute strike. The young forward is again the difference maker so far tonight with his goal separating the two sides.
49' Zenit again have the ball in the back of the net but this time it’s disallowed for handball! Mignolet tried to clear the danger but his punch hit Kuzyaev's arm and the ball found its way into the Club Brugge goal. Unlucky for the visitors.
47' A late first half Raphael Guerreiro strike has given Borussia Dortmund the lead over Lazio so as it stands, Club Brugge sit just one point outside of the top two positions in Group F. If these results stay the same tonight, it would set up a huge match next mid-week in Rome between Lazio and the Belgian side.
46' Both sets of players are back on the field and the second half is underway!
A. Mostovoy
A. Erokhin
46' Mostovoy also joins the action at the expense of Erokhin.
D. Krugovoy
Y. Rakitskiy
46' Rakitskiy makes way for Krugovoy at the same time.
M. Ozdoev
S. Driussi
46' A triple change at the break for Zenit! Driussi is replaced by Ozdoev for the first.
Zenit have played the better football tonight on the whole but haven’t offered too much in attack. A substitution early in the second half could be required to get them back into this match.
Well it’s far from being remembered as a Champions League classic but Club Brugge won’t mind as they head into the break in front. A strike midway through the first half from De Ketelaere the difference so far in this crucial Group F match-up.
45' + 1' HALF-TIME: CLUB BRUGGE 1-0 ZENIT.
44' CLOSE! Club Brugge pressure the ball and Lang collects a poor pass from Sutormin. The forward on loan from Ajax takes on his man before firing at goal from 20 yards. Kerhakov gets behind the attempt though and does well to collect the loose ball.
42' Club Brugge have certainly grown in confidence after their opening goal. De Ketelaere and Lang are constantly pressuring the Zenit defence when the away side are in possession.
40' Erokhin is down and needs treament after a clash of knees with Lang. Fortunately, the midfielder looks able to continue.
38' CHANCE! Club Brugge nearly double their lead. A corner is floated in from the left and Vanaken rises highest but his header from close range is straight at Kerzhakov in the Zenit goal who collects well.
36' That opening goal for the hosts has arguably come against the run of play, but they won’t mind that at all. With the score still level between Dortmund and Lazio in the other Group F clash, the Belgian side currently sit two points behind the Italian outfit.
C. De Ketelaere
Goal
33' GOOOOAAALLLLLL!!! 1-0 TO CLUB BRUGGE! DE KETELAERE OPENS THE SCORING!!!! Finally, we see some action. Ricca crosses the ball from the left but his delivery is only half cleared by the Zenit defence. The loose ball falls kindly to De Ketelaere who smashes home a first-timed left-footed shot into the top left corner from 15 yards out.
32' Zenit are looking the side more likely to make the breakthrough here. The Russian outfit are knocking the ball around well in the opposing half and are patiently waiting to exploit any gap in the hosts’ defence.
30' We’re still yet to see a big chance at goal for either side in the opening half an hour of play here in Belgium. Both sides are doing well to retreat defensively when they lose the ball in attack. As a result, it’s been a very disciplined if not exciting match so far.
27' Zenit have lost each of their last four UEFA Champions League away games, and are winless in seven on the road in the competition (D1 L6) since beating Lyon 0-2 in November 2015. They’ll need to change that record tonight here in Bruges or they’ll finish bottom of Group F and be out of European competition for the season.
25' Zenit have the ball in the back of the net, but it won’t count! Azmoun tucks home after Driussi squared to him but the winger had crept into an offside position before setting up his striker. Big let off for Club Brugge.
24' Bonaventure exchanges a one-two with Vanaken and pushes into the Zenit penalty area. The forward strikes at goal from 20 yards out but Rakitskiy does well to block the effort.
22' It’s definitely been a very cagey affair so far in the opening 20 minutes of this Champions League Group F fixture. Both sides have held possession well in midfield but have lacked any sort of end product so far in the final third.
19' Club Brugge respond to recent Zenit pressure and go in search of the opening goal in this clash. Lang cuts inside from the left wing but his shot from distance is blocked by Prokhin.
18' Zenit force their first corner of the evening as Mata blocks Santos’ cross. The full-back opts to play the corner short but the attack breaks down and Club Brugge collect possession.
16' There’s Zenit shouts for a penalty as Kossounou clearly handles the ball in the hosts penalty area. Thankfully for him though, Azmoun had drifted offside for the away side prior to the defender’s intervention.
14' Speaking of shots, Malcolm has a go from distance for Zenit. The former Barcelona man drops his shoulder, cuts inside from the right wing but his left-footed effort from 30 yards out ends up well wide of Mignolet’s goal.
12' Neither side have managed to muster a shot on the opposition goal in the opening ten minutes or so. Club Brugge have looked more threatening with the ball so far, but the away side look solid defensively.
10' Club Brugge have only won home and away group stage games against the same opponent twice before (1992-93 vs CSKA Moscow and 2005-06 vs SK Rapid Wien). They need to complete a double over Zenit this evening in order to still have a chance at qualfying for the knockout stages of this year's Champions League.
7' The hosts grab the first corner of the night as De Ketelaere is dispossessed by Sutormin down the left wing. Club Brugge play it short but the away side manage to clear the danger.
5' Boneventure will be key tonight for the hosts. The Nigerian forward is playing off the right wing but looks to be drifting inside and between Zenit’s midfield and defence. He looks to latch onto a Balanta pass down the right flank but he controls poorly and the ball goes out for a Zenit goal kick.
3' Zenit have controlled much of the early possession in this Champions League match-up. The visitors need a win this evening to keep up their hopes of finishing third in the group and qualifying for the Europa League.
1' Referee Serdar Gozubuyuk blows his whistle and we’re underway here in the historic city of Bruges!
The players are emerging from the tunnel and kick-off is just moments away.
Club Brugge are winless in their last 12 UEFA Champions League home games (D5 L7) – only FCSB (13 between 1996-current) have had a longer run without a win at home in the competition.
Zenit arrive in Belgium as Russian Premier League leaders and in fantastic form domestically. Needing a big win tonight, manager Sergei Semak opts for an attacking starting XI. Malcom, Azmoun and Driussi all start upfront as Artem Dyzuba misses out through injury. Former Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren is suspended for this evening’s clash so 19-year-old Prokhin slots into the visitor’s defence.
After a poor showing domestically at the weekend - drawing 0-0 with second bottom Excel Mouscron - Club Brugge boss Philippe Clement reshuffles his pack as they welcome the Russian champions to town. Bonaventure comes back into the hosts’ attack whilst Ricca plays at left-back. The central midfielder three of Balanta, Vanaken and Vormer will need to be at their best tonight against tough opposition.
ZENIT SUBS: Aleksandr Vasyutin, Andrey Lunev, Danil Krugovoy, Andrey Mostovoy, Yuri Zhirkov, Magomed Ozdoev, Leon Musaev, Daniil Shamkin.
ZENIT (4-3-3): Mikhail Kerzhakov; Aleksey Sutormin, Danila Prokhin, Yaroslav Rakitskiy, Douglas Santos; Aleksandr Erokhin, Wilmar Barrios, Daler Kuzyaev; Sebastian Driussi, Sardar Azmoun, Malcom.
CLUB BRUGGE SUBS: Ethan Horvath, Eduard Sobol, Michael Krmencik, Simon Deli, David Okereke, Youssouph Badji, Ignace Van Der Brempt, Thomas Van den Keybus, Siebe Schrijvers.
CLUB BRUGGE (4-3-3): Simon Mignolet; Clinton Mata, Brandon Mechele, Odilon Kossounou, Federico Ricca; Eder Balanta, Hans Vanaken, Ruud Vormer; Noa Lang, Emmanuel Bonaventure, Charles De Ketelaere.
The two underdogs of Group F face off tonight in Northern Belgium with both sides desperately needing the three points on offer for different reasons. The hosts can put pressure on Lazio – who currently sit in second spot in the group – with a win tonight taking them just one point behind the Serie A outfit. Zenit are already mathematically unable to qualify for the Champions League knockout rounds but need a victory to keep alive their hopes of dropping down into the Europa League with a third-place group finish.
