As Nigeria prepare to take on South Africa in their opening Group C encounter of the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, GOAL looks at the tale of the stats as these two African football heavyweights clash at the Stade Moulay Hassan in Rabat.

While Nigeria are the best team in Africa and 39th in the world, the Southern Africans are rated as the third-best team on the continent and 58th best football-playing country globally.

South Africa are unbeaten in each of their last seven matches at the Africa Cup of Nations (W6 D1). Their last defeat dates back to the 2016 tournament – losing 1-0 to Ghana in the third-place play-off inside Stade Ahmadou Ahidjo, Yaounde.

The Super Falcons have never missed any edition of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations since their debut.

They have reached the semi-finals on all occasions while winning the tournament for a record nine times.

This will be the thirteenth encounter between Nigeria and South Africa at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

Nigeria hold the upper hand with eleven wins to Banyana’s two. Their last outing was in 2018 when the Super Falcons claimed the African title.

Since her debut in the competition, the reigning African Women Player of the Year has scored 13 goals for the Super Falcons in the competition. Many of these were during Cameroon 2016 – where she was on song on six occasions.
