Where does the future lie for Aubrey Ngoma?

Cape Town City, Aubrey Ngoma
With speculation rife surrounding the Citizens' prized asset, Goal looks at where the midfielder's future is potentially headed

Aubrey Ngoma was one of Cape Town City's star performers under the tutelage of former coach Eric Tinkler, and subsequently has been nominated for the Premier Soccer League (PSL) Player of the Season award.

The 27-year-old enjoyed a fruitful campaign where he scored five goals in the league and contributed an impressive 12 assists. But with the 2016/2017 season now a thing of the past, the future of one of the South Africa’s hottest entities remains uncertain with several possible suitors lying in wait.

Ngoma has already been at the centre of a row between Tshwane giant’s Mamelodi Sundowns and his current employers. This was after Pitso Mosimane allegedly contacted Ngoma in an effort to convince the City playmaker to join the African Champions. Despite City boss John Comitis vehement claims that Ngoma will not leave the Mother City, speculation continues to remain rife regarding a possible move to Chloorkop.

Nevertheless, City are bringing up a new chapter in their sensational football story with the appointment of legendary Bafana Bafana forward Benni McCarthy. While McCarthy’s appointment has been met with much fanfare, he will be heavily reliant on the current crux of players, making Ngoma even more vital to City. This could potentially tip the scales In City’s favour as Ngoma may be tempted to share in City’s ambitions.

Although, If Ngoma is to stay at City he will also have the opportunity to build on his previous success, and potentially make a name for himself on the continent as City qualified for the Caf Confederation Cup. But if Ngoma is to make the move to the Tshwane giants, no one would blame him.

Masandawana are currently in search of a replacement for the now French-based playmaker Keagan Dolly. Dolly’s absence has undoubtedly left a void in Mosimane’s side and with a move for Maritzburg United’s Deolin Mekoa being put on the back burner, Ngoma would be an ideal candidate for the role.

The former University of Pretoria winger is as creative as they come and will relish the opportunity to team up with the likes of Khama Billiat. It should also be noted that a move to a club such as Sundowns usually brings with it pressures of it own, but Ngoma is experienced enough to deal with the cut throat environment within a big club, having previously turned out for the Soweto giants Orlando Pirates.

Another important factor that could play a role in whether Ngoma stays at City, is the future of Lebogang Manyama. Ngoma has built an almost telepathic partnership with Manyama over the last twelve months and if the link is to be broken, Ngoma may be tempted to move away from the coast.

While Ngoma’s future is a mystery considering there are pros and cons on both sides of the table, one thing is certain is that it will take a club with plenty of ambition and deep pockets to lure him away from City.
