They may have been playing in Auckland and not Wellington, but the Phoenix have attracted a club record 23,648 fans to Eden Park on Friday as they played host to Melbourne Victory.

The crowd figure is the club's largest ever for a regular-season game beating the previous record of 20,078 set back in 2011.

It's also the fourth largest crowd this campaign in the A-League with only Victory, Melbourne City and Sydney FC attracting more fans to a single home game.

As of last round, Wellington's average home attendance this season was sitting at 7,298 - a considerable increase on the average 5,694 fans they pulled in across the 2017/18 campaign.

The Phoenix have been performing strongly on the pitch under new coach Mark Rudan and look poised to play finals football for the first time since 2015.

Those improved results have given fans more incentive to turn up with Auckland also proving its potential as a happy home for the club.

On the pitch at Eden Park, the Phoenix would be held to a 1-1 draw after Keisuke Honda equalised for Victory from the penalty spot.
