The reigning MTN8 Cup champions are still looking for a new coach, but could settle for Tembo with the new season set to start next week

With the search for a new coach ongoing, SuperSport United could settle for current caretaker coach Kaitano Tembo.

The club’s long-serving assistant coach is tipped to replace Eric Tinkler who parted ways with the club towards the end of last season.

Having been linked with Free State Stars coach Luc Eymael in the past few months and former England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson, United are now looking at giving Tembo a chance to prove his worth.

It has also been reported that the 2017 Caf Confederation Cup finalists will have a board meeting next week to finalise the matter regarding the vacant position.

With the reigning MTN8 Cup champions set to get their 2018/19 Premier Soccer League (PSL) campaign underway against Cape Town City away on Saturday, August 4, they will need to make a decision sooner rather than later on who will fill the void left by Tinkler.

In addition, Matthews also revealed that they have engaged a number of candidates in their quest to appoint a new manager.

“He ended the season fairly well and it is only proper for us to give him a chance,” Matthews told Daily Sun.

“He must just prove himself to become big. He is under no pressure, we’re not panicking and in no rush – but remember, football is all about results,” he said.

“Look, Kaitano is the one who said he was not ready when Stuart Baxter announced that he was leaving us,” Matthews added.

“I think he is ready now. There will be no big sword over his head to do anything. Kaitano is a long-term asset for us. We just have to rally around him,” he concluded.

Moreover, the reigning MTN8 champions are set to begin the defence of their crown away to Orlando Pirates on Saturday, August 11.
