The Morocco coach believes he stands a better chance of steering his team to the last four should he meet Ghana in the quarters

Morocco coach Herve Renard would fancy a meeting with former outfit Ghana at the Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon.

The former Lille manager was on the good side of events on Tuesday, guiding Morocco to book passage to the quarter-finals following a 1-0 win over reigning champions Cote d'Ivoire.

Ghana currently top Group D ahead of their last group game against Egypt on Wednesday, and anything but defeat will see the four-time champions finish as group winners, effectively setting a quarter-final date with Morocco who finish second in Group C

"There are teams above us in the Africa Cup, but although they are in front of us, they will have to prove that," Renard said.

"For the next stage of the competition, it is Ghana that is likely to finish first in Group D.

"I have often met Ghana and have always been lucky.

"Hopefully, the good star will continue [to watch over me]."

One of the Black Stars' assistant coaches when Ghana hosted the Africa Cup of Nations in 2008, Renard has evidently gone on to become a master of his own.

He led Zambia to win the 2012 Afcon, beating the Black Stars 1-0 in the semi-finals.

He against annexed the trophy with Cote d'Ivoire in 2015 following a penalty shootout victory over Ghana in the final.
