The European champions learned their Champions League group stage opponents on Thursday and saw their players take a clean sweep of trophies from UEFA's awards ceremony.

Madrid may no longer be without best forward winner Cristiano Ronaldo, but they have "completed" their squad, as Julen Lopetegui put it, with the return of Mariano Diaz from Lyon.

After receiving such grand recognition from the governing body, Madrid will be confident of keeping up their perfect league start when they take on a side with just one point from two games.

The visitors may have needed to come back from two goals down to seal a point late on against Real Sociedad for their only point from the first two games, but their performances have been better than results suggest.

Against Sociedad and Athletic Club, who beat them 2-1, Mauricio Pellegrino's team put up a fair fight and landed a few blows as they found their way into dangerous areas.

And Julen Lopetegui has warned the European champions must be at their best to ensure they live up to their billing as heavy favourites.

"They have just one point but could have six because they played well against Real Sociedad and Athletic," he said. "They've kicked off the season looking good. They're sure to be tough opposition, well organised, with better players than last season and they'll certainly make life difficult for us."

Pellegrino, too, insisted his side should not be underestimated and feels they could pull off a surprise.

"We have the mindset to compete against all teams of La Liga," he told reporters. "That has been proven against Athletic and Real Sociedad. We made mistakes, but we was fine. This will be one more challenge.

"Cristiano Ronaldo is not here, but Real Madrid are Real Madrid. Football is a team sport. Now, Real Madrid are a bit of diferent from last year. They want to have the ball. They are less chaotic. They're a great team. But sometimes the better team does not win. The best team in 90 minutes wins. We will need to harness the moments in the game."
