Nhlapo happy to share his knowledge with younger Bafana players

The unsettled defender has been called up as one of the makeshift players to represent South Africa in the 2018 Chan qualifier against Botswana

Bidvest Wits defender Siyabonga Nhlapo says it’s always an honour to be called up to the Bafana Bafana squad.

“For me, a call-up is always a call-up, it does not matter whether it is a Chan, Cosafa, Afcon or World Cup qualifier,” Nhlapo told the media.

The Soweto-born player was loaned out to Highlands Park for the second half of last season, and he is keen use the call-up to good effect.

In addition, Nhlapo will be looking to earn his ninth cap in Francistown against a side that will be buoyed by the arrval of coach Major David Bright.

“This gives you a chance to work with the coach and be in the (national team) set-up. For us to assemble as we did is a great opportunity to go experience what we have never experienced before,” Nhlapo said.

“I do not think there is a player here (in the squad) who has played in a Chan match before. So, it is a great opportunity for everyone. The PSL and continental football are not the same. Chan will give us a taste of playing against other African countries. Scouts might be there and we have youngsters in the team. It can be a breakthrough for them,” Nhlapo said.

Nhlapo made his Bafana debut three years ago in a goalless draw with New Zealand under the tutelage of Gordon Igesund.

He acknowledges that as a senior player in the current side, his duty is to make the younger players feel at ease.

“When I first joined the national team I found senior players like Yeye (Reneilwe Letsholonyane) and Bernard Parker and they welcomed me. Now, I will also do that to these youngsters in the team,” Nhlapo said.
