The Soweto giants are looking for Komphela’s successor with the former Blues coach seen as a strong favourite

As Kaizer Chiefs continue their search for a new head coach, former Ghana and Chelsea coach Avram Grant's name is the latest to be bandied about for the vacant coaching job at Naturena.

Amakhosi are looking for Steve Komphela’s replacement ahead of the new Premier Soccer League (PSL) campaign and sources close to Daily Sun indicate that Grant could be set to take over at the Soweto giants.

It is reported that the 62-year-old former Black Stars manager could be unveiled as the new Chiefs boss at the end of the current season.

If Grant is indeed appointed, he will be tasked with not only overseeing Chiefs' pre-season preperations, but will be entrusted with the responsibility of releasing those players who are deemed surplus to requirements as well as making recommendations on signing new players.

The former Chelsea, Portsmouth and West Ham United coach is currently in India, where he’s coaching North East United FC, who are campaigning in the Indian Super League.

Meanwhile, the publication indicates that there has been a barrage of applications from local and international coaches, who have shown interest in one of South African football's most highly coveted jobs.

Chiefs previous coach Komphela, failed to bring a trophy at Naturena after signing a three-year deal at the beginning of the 2015/16 campaign, but the next man to take over at the helm will be expected to do much better.

“Grant has worked in Africa before, where he wrote a successful story with Ghana, where he spent three fruitful years. He would come in handy for frustrated Chiefs,” said a source close to Daily Sun.

Although Chiefs’ football manager Bobby Motaung declined to comment on the names of coaches who have shown an interest in the job, he said they could have an idea on who they are eyeing before the end of the month.

“We’re not in a hurry. This is a process,” Motaung was quoted as saying.

“We are yet to review and assess those applications. The season has not finished yet, hence we are taking it easy,” he explained.

“We don’t have deadline or set any timelines on when we should appoint a coach. But that will be before the new season starts,” he said.

Moreover, Free State Stars coach Luc Eymael and Township Rollers coach Nikola Kavazovic are some of the mentors linked with the vacant caching job whilst a jobless Eric Tinkler has also been named as one of the coaches eyeing the position.

However, the publication reports that Eymael is finalising his move to the 2016 Caf Confederation Cup finalists SuperSport United and will take over in May.

Chiefs are also reportedly planning to part ways with technical director, Robertus Hutting, whom they have deemed incapable of helping the team moving forward.

On the playing front, goalkeeper Brilliant Khuzwayo is set to be released while Edmore Chirambadare, Keagan Buchanan, Bhongolwethu Jayiya, Bernard Parker and Tsepo Masilela are all part of the upcoming exodus.

“Tsepo and Parker are sure cases to leave while others could still survive. What I know is that Lorenzo Gordinho will be coming back from a loan move to Bloemfontein Celtic,” added the source.
