Talks surrounding a potential return to South African has gained momentum over recent days, with reports in Egypt and at home, suggesting that Mamelodi Sundowns may be keen on the player.

Mahlambi has reportedly been identified as a direct replacement for Tau, who is at the centre of a mammoth R50 million offer from English Premier League side Brighton and Hove Albion.

It has been previously reported that Sundowns had already begun negotiations with the 20-year-old star and were mulling over the idea of bringing him on loan.

However, according to the players’ agent Glyn Binkin, a move is yet to materialise as the player is the yet to be assessed by Al Ahly’s new coach.

Nonetheless, with speculation rife, Sundowns too have remained coy on the move. Speaking to PowerFM, the Brazilians' spokesman Thulani Thuswa could not confirm nor deny the acquisition of the Bafana Bafana international.

“I cannot reveal whether we have signed Phakamani Mahlambi or not. The matter is sensitive at this point,” Thuswa told PowerSport.
