Malawi coach Ronny Van Geneugden impressed with draw against Cameroon

Malawi coach Ronny Van Geneugden has commended his players despite dropping two points in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier goalless draw with Cameroon at home on Tuesday.

The draw came on the backdrop of Malawi losing 1-0 in the reverse fixture away in Cameroon last Friday, as well as last month’s 3-0 thumping by Morocco.

After watching his side failing to secure victory at home on Tuesday, Van Geneugden is at least satisfied with the way his players executed themselves.

“The boys did well,” Van Geneugden was quoted as saying by Malawian publication The Nation.

“It is not easy to hold a big team like Cameroon, who are Africa champions, and have very strong players. We took control of the game. We had more chances, but we were just unlucky not to score.”

The Flames’ failure against the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon saw them remain on third spot in Group B and they are three points behind second-placed Morocco.

With Cameroon hosting next year's Afcon tournament, only one team from Group B qualifies.

Malawi last qualified for the Afcon finals in 2010, having previously participated at the 1984 edition.
