Keisuke Honda in negotiations to become A-League marquee

Japanese attacker Keisuke Honda is in ongoing negotiations with Football Federation Australia to become an A-League marquee next season.

According to The World Game, Honda and his brother-turned-manager Hiroyuki, turned down an initial offer made by the FFA but kept a potential move alive by asking for a higher figure.

Thought that figure is still being assessed by the FFA, A-League chief Greg O’Rourke made it clear that the former AC Milan man is someone he wants to see in the competition.

"Honda is the one we really went after and we’re still talking to his management,” O'Rourke told The World Game.

"We made a pitch and they came back with a larger number and we’re working through that.

"We won’t give up until he’s actually gone and signed with a team elsewhere.

"He’s been top of the player targets and these things can take time."

The 31-year-old has had a distinguished career to date scoring in two World Cups and has spent the bulk of his career in Europe with AC and CSKA Moscow.

Honda's most recent stint was with Mexican side Pachuca, where he scored 10 goals across 29 appearances.

It's understood several clubs have expressed interest in signing the Japanese attacker should he be lured to the A-League.

Along with Honda, Fernando Torres is another rumoured marquee being targeted by the FFA with the Atletico striker currently without a club.
