A David vs. Goliath battle is set to take place in Durban, and Goal looks at the two teams' route to final

The 2018/19 Nedbank Cup final is almost upon us, and the excitement is palpable ahead of what will be an exciting end to the season at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.

With Kaizer Chiefs coming up against an unfancied TS Galaxy in the final, Amakhosi are deemed to be favourites considering that they are a Premier Soccer League (PSL) team.

However, TS Galaxy will hope to record a major upset as they face up to what is set to be their toughest test to date.

Both sides have had similar routes to the final but while Chiefs came up against Cape Town City in the quarterfinals and Chippa United in the semi-finals, they have had an easier ride considering that they took on ABC Motsepe League outfits in the Tornado FC and The Magic earlier in the competition.

On the other hand, TS Galaxy were tested throughout, although not against the fiercest of teams.

While Umvoti was a relatively easier excursion, coming up against sides from the NFD where they finished in the top eight certainly was a test.

The Galaxy faced off against familiar opponents Jomo Cosmos as well as Cape Umoya United and their most difficult test was surely against Steve Komphela’s Golden Arrows in the last four.

While granted, that both sides did not have the most difficult of routes to the final, unlike Amakhosi, who are 13-time Nedbank Cup champions, for TS Galaxy, this was unknown territory.

No one would have expected a side in its infancy and from the second division of South African football to make it so far, but that is the beauty of Cup football.

Nonetheless, just like how Chiefs brushed aside their PSL opponents and struggled against the smaller clubs, Galaxy thrived on playing sides above and below them.

This is what makes their game against the Soweto giants all the more intriguing.

On paper, Chiefs might be seen as having the upper hand, but their struggles early on as well as poor showing in the league this season means that a shock is not out of the question.
