Fikru Teferra Chennaiyin FC with the ISL TrophyISL

I-League 2017-18: Mohun Bagan in talks with Fikru Teferra

The alarm bells were already ringing at the Mohun Bagan tent in the Maidan and after the 2-1 loss to Minerva Punjab, it reached deafening levels. They went on to release Ansumana Kromah after a string of poor performances from the Liberian and roped in Akram Moghrabi, who had previously led Churchill Brothers to I-League title in the 2012-13 season.

The Green and Maroons are looking to add further firepower upfront as sources close to Goal confirmed that former ATK and Chennaiyin FC striker Fikru Teferra is in advanced talks with Bagan officials. Both parties have already reached a verbal agreement and the financial nitty-gritties have also been sorted out.

The deal will be finalised within a few days if the officials manage to reach a mutual agreement to terminate the contract with one of the foreign players in the squad. After a poor run of form in front of goal, it seems that Aser Dipanda will be the one to face the axe, and Fikru will be a direct replacement for the Cameroonian.

The Ethiopian is currently a free-agent which means Mohun Bagan do not have to negotiate with any other club. Efforts are on so that Fikru can make his debut against arch-rivals East Bengal on January 21.

Fikru was one of the key players of the ATK side which won the ISL in its inaugural season, as he scored 5 goals from 12 appearances. But he had a disappointing second stint in India with Chennaiyin FC as he found the net only once in 11 outings, although the Super Machans went on to lift silverware at the end of the season.

The Kolkata giants will be hoping that Fikru would bring his scoring boots with him as Mohun Bagan are currently languishing at the 5th position on the I-League table with 13 points from 9 matches.
