Go Round’s Willie Udube not moved by Akwa United win

Go Round head coach, Willie Udube has refused to be carried away by their 2-1 pre-season friendly game win over Akwa United at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, Port Harcourt on Friday.

Samuel Stone put Go Round in the ascendancy in the 32nd minute after he made his way into the Promise Keepers’ vital area before he unleashed a shot into the bottom right corner of the net but Akwa United fought back gamely and they were on level terms through the Brazilian, Alberico Da Silva before the end of the first half.

Go Round regained their lead and what turned out to be the match-winner in the 62nd minute through Morris Chukwu whose effort took a huge deflection off defender Denis Nya before ending at the back of the net.

While reviewing the game, Udube who took over from Ngozi Elechi said that he is still trying to build a team and that they see the result against Akwa United as an indication that they are making progress in their quest to raise a formidable team that will be ready for life in the top flight when it kicks off.

He said he still has some players he is yet to test and that they are heading back home to continue with the rest of their preparations for the start of the season.

“It was a good season but I can’t say that it was a perfect game for us in spite of the win,” Udube told Goal.

“We did not see the win as the sign that we have arrived because we know that we still have a lot of work to do before we can say that we are ready for the season. We are just starting our preparations and this win is just to tell us that we are doing well.

“I told my players to express themselves and not allow anything to hinder them from producing their best. They listened to the admonition from the bench and it was no surprise that we won the game. We shall go back home and continue with the rest of our preparations.”

Go Round gained promotion to the elite division last season along with Heartland from the Southern zone.
