Enyimba’s skipper, Mfon Udoh has stated that the fierce battle for supremacy in the latest Abia derby which fetched two red cards and produced three goals was understandable after the People’s Elephant’s beat Abia Warriors 2-1 in Calabar on Sunday.
Udoh was the match hero after he produced a master-class performance to net two goals which guaranteed the maximum points but the striker noted that he was never in support of the drama that played out and that the tension soaked encounter was occasioned by the desire of both clubs to out-do each other.
“Derbies are always very tough like the one witnessed between us and Abia Warriors. I guess they wanted their pound of flesh after the point we took off them in Umuahia in the first round. They came all out and we were determined to resist them too. It was this that produced those exciting moments and as usual temper rose,” Udoh told Goal.
“The coach and the management have told us that we need to do things differently in case of next time so that we do not incur unnecessary cards like we had one of our players sent off. We are happy to win the match and we shall start our preparations for the next match immediately.”
The important home win has taken Enyimba’s points tally to 38 and they are now third on the league table below Plateau United (45 points) and MFM (40 points) ahead of weekend fixture with Nasarawa United.
